Research question: How do Americans and Chinese people act differently?

Planning of the report: I will analyze the conflict in the movie, rush hour. I will

also research online and try to understand the differences between the American

culture and the Chinese culture. I will ask my parents what are the ways to

prevent people these problems from happening.

Before the conflict of James Carter and Inspector Lee, James Carter

assumed that Inspector Lee couldn’t speak English, but after he found out that

his partner Lee was just pretending, he got very irritated and start to have a

conflict with Lee about solving the case by just him. Inspector Lee starts to find

Carter annoying and he turns the black man’s radio on in the car. James Carter

gave him a warning that he could do that in China, but not here in America. Lee

could get himself in trouble in here. It is a very disrespectful way to do that in the

America culture. After it happened, Carter switches the music to a pop rap

English song on the radio, which Chinese people do not like to listen. Carter even

matches the rhythms with his arms while he was driving. Lee finds it boring and

just lays back down and relax.

According to the movie, in American culture people like to behave in a

confidant way and to talk loudly. This shows respect to each other. In the Chinese

culture, it is very important not to speak loudly in front of anyone that is older

than you. That shows a very grateful respect to each other. The two cultures have

the value of respecting each other, however they do it in a different way that

believe. Their behaviors affect how they work together for a period of time.

Individualism - Collectivism should be one of the dimensions in the movie

Rush hour. In the United States, they work as a team to achieve their goal. In the

Chinese culture, it is best if you do it individually, because you will feel more

comfortable. I believe that the reason for the Americans in the United States to

work collectivism will make them feel more determine towards their goal,

because any concepts that were created were shared and they make changes and

improvements towards anything that they want to achieve. In the Chinese

achieve what they want. In the movie Rush hour, it shows power distance index

dimension. Inspector Lee request the FBI to put their men back or the kid that

was kidnapped will be in danger, but the FBI did things in their own way. It’s

foolish to listen to some corps from foreign countries. It shows that in some jobs,

it is not easy to approach to their boss and follow your orders. They are the FBI

operation and Lee was just a policeman that was assisting the case, they had no

reasons to follow what he requested. The ways between the two-culture works

really shows the style of their culture.

It is difficult to make culture problems stop because most cultures believe

that actions that other culture is doing are breaking their own culture. For

example talking that loud in China is a disrespectful way and working

individually in the United States is a disrespectful way of doing things. The only

way for them to stop this from happening is explaining each other’s cultures

before people mistaken it and the conflict starts to happen. They definitely need

time to adapt to the situation, so the people from each culture should understand

and forgive them from doing it for just a short period of time. Explain your

culture to them in a polite way and try to adapt to their culture if you’re in other

countries that have a different culture from you.
