Overview• The traditional standards of personal
contact, filling out applications, and sending in resumes has dramatically changed in the internet age.

of the first interactions after receiving your resume.• You can improve your marketability by improving your
professional image online.
The Internet can serve many purposes.
• Networking– Staying in touch
• Publishing– Blogs, Articles, Cloud
• Information– News, Current Events
• Entertainment– Music, Videos, Games
The Basics
• Most common form of social media: email!
There are more than 3.1 Billion individual email addresses world wide!

The email address is the key to accessing most social media!
• The email address has become the “social security number” of the new millennium
It is important to remember your email address may be the first impression anemployer has of you… while [email protected] is a fun email address It may not be the message you want prospective employers to have of you.
Which email service should I use?
• To determine this consider:– Cost (There are many services that are free)– Accessibility (many accounts are accessible
via a smart phone)– Services (what extras are available
applications, cloud storage, etc)
Usernames & Passwords
• When making a password use a pass phrase instead of admin, password, or your name.

The longer the password the more secure your data!
• The most popular form of social media is currently Facebook. While it was originally designed for students it has achieved wide spread usage off the college campus.

• There are multiple applications within Facebook to include Games, Marketplace, Photo Gallery, and Chat.

• Common wisdom is that most jobs come from information between family and friends
The Good & The Bad
• Facebook allows you to communicate and network with family and friends.
• Many employers are doing internet searches of prospective employees.
• Don’t post anything you would not want your grandmother to see!

• “Living Resume”– Updates to your resume data immediately
available to your connections.– See who is interested in your resume.– Discover who your contacts are connected to.

• LinkedIn is a great application for promoting your abilities.
• Many employers will review your LinkedIn account.
• Control your image by promoting your skills.
Publishing
• Web logs “Blogs” are personal web pages to publish information, creative works, or topics that interest you.

Publishing articles, papers, and books!
• Term papers and Position papers.
• Publish the next Great American Novel.
• Technical writings in your area of expertise
Cloud Storage… just in case!
• Cloud storage allows you to store files and documents in an account you have access to via the internet. If your computer crashes, your files live on!

Information Super Highway• The “internet” has become the primary source of information for
many Americans.• Major News Networks have a significant presence on the web.
