BASICS: who should do it?

4. Doing it is easy, doing it well is hard.
Tumblr: blogging for all of us
Easy input for seven types of content:
text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio, video.
Personal profiles- Never private, even if it is
Groups
- great for coordinating efforts, communities
Pages
- profiles for organizations, businesses, music
educators, schools, nonprofits, etc.
Facebook: best practices
Conversations: talk to people
Post regularly
ALWAYS respond (well, almost…)
NEVER remove (well, almost…)
Use photos
Post information, not just marketing
Post calls to action instead of fundraising appeals
Fall back posts: inspirational quotes and facts, polls

Twitter: where to start
Create a user-friendly Twitter handle (@yourorganization or @you)
Add a photo
Find people you already know & Find people in your area (#RVA)
Find organizations you are interested in
Get a desktop or mobile client: Hootsuite, Tweetdeck
Add your Twitter handle to all your signatures/sites/cards

So how should we do this?
Don’t censor. Don’t. – instead, respond (when appropriate) or ignore (when the post is inappropriate. Caveat: always remove tweets that are indecent
Use photos and videos
Do tell stories. The most valuable use of social media is telling the stories that matter deeply to your community.What are the stories your organization needs to tell?

Don’t auto-post (post your Facebook status as a tweet, etc.)
