Narrative • Set in a typical family home owned by a young couple.• First scene starts with the main girl sitting on the sofa watching the

television like a normal Friday night.• Her boyfriend then comes in with a big brown bag and appears to

be panicked by something or someone. He chaotically tell her to quickly pack a bag giving no explanation on why. The girl is confused and runs to their bedroom to pack her bag.

• The brown bag which the boyfriend came into the room with seems to have some sort significance to it as the camera continuously goes back to it.

• The boyfriend rushes to the kitchen and gets a knife from the draw. As he holds up the knife a glimmer of light reflects off it onto his face.

• A car then pulls up onto the drive and the head lights beams into his eyes emphasising his fear. This is where the 2 minutes will end leaving thoughts with audience on what will happen next.

Camera Shots• We are aiming to film our thriller opening with elements similar

to Alfred Hitchcock, for example our use of camera shots:• Point of view shots which will emphasize voyeurism- the feeling

of being watched which Hitchcock uses regularly in his films.• Close-ups of important objects, for example a weapon,

increasing tension and also bringing the audiences attention to the object and it’s importance.

• High angles will make the characters, especially the woman, much more timid and make them seem like they are weak.

• Panning will be used to follow the characters, again like they are being watched. The panning may also follow them to a point where the character is obscured by something so the audience cannot see all of what they are doing adding mystery.

Thriller opening in the style of Alfred

HitchcockIn our thriller opening we are going to use certain elements from an Alfred Hitchcock film for example (general elements): • a blonde female protagonist • Dominant male• Certain camera shots and movements: panning,

high/low angles to emphasise power within the characters such as the dominant male

• Voyeurism• and a big part of our thriller is going to be

based on creating suspense, so sound will be used in certain areas to increase the tension in a scene.

Setting• The setting for our thriller will be in a home,

which would create the mood that there is nothing wrong, therefore the audience will have to suspect through the 2 minutes of the thriller. So nothing is being given away.

• The Setting is going to stay the same throughout the opening as we want to keep it simple, but use elements to create greater suspense. But we will use certain rooms within the house that match the narrative.

Film plot

• Set in a small house in the city of London.• Lead male character (Hugo) has a secret, his

girlfriend (Mia) has no idea of this secret.• By the end of the film the audience learn that

Hugo is a psychopathic killer.• However throughout the film the audience

are thrown of course by believing that he is the hero and there are dangerous people after him, when you soon discover that they are the police trying to catch a killer.

• In the opening sequence Hugo comes in with a brown bag in which the audience have no idea what is inside when in fact it is filled with photos of his victims and blood stained clothes from his killings.

Locations

The main area for filming, a living room. This will be where our first scene will begin with a panning of the room, leading the audience to believe that there is a sense of security that is until Hugo comes rushing in.

Page 8: Media Pitch

We have included an element of film noir by using venetian blinds. They will create an interesting effect as the headlights of the car come in.

The kitchen, where the knife scene will take place and the headlights shining through the blind as the 'dangerous' people come.
