– Let me ask you, what’s social about hiding your updates from your nearest and dearest? For some Facebook is the closest to being in the same room with our nearest and dearest, oceans apart day after day!!! (Breaking into song here)

– Anyhow I bet you have seen the New Notify Friends Button on your Newsfeed Updates or Posts esp. Images/Videos.

– But what the heck does it mean for you? I’ll get into that in detail in a bit…

What does this Newsfeed Update Mean for You?

– Am assuming you aren’t yet too keen on paid ads or boosting your Fan Page posts right? Even if you are a Social and/or Leisure Facebook user, I believe you’ll still be interested in this particular topic.

– You see Facebook uses specific factors to assess whether your friend’s updates make it into your News Feed and vice versa. Take note of the factors below and adjust your daily actions accordingly.

#1. Who – Who posted and how often do you engage with their updates or content from that person, group or page!

#2. When – People want to see the Fresh, New, Trending information. Facebook therefore looks at when you posted an update to determine which User’s newsfeed it gets fed into. This is where having a follower base in your time zone could work a treat! For instance, whatever update you make today will rank higher in the Feed. BUT, to get ranked higher & shown wider, Facebook considers whether update is relevant to your Friends or other users. Here are some fine examples;

– if you share a friend’s baby shower announcement,

– a birthday, new job, promotion, engagement, loss and grief etc.

Even if you posted 24-48hrs ago, Facebook may give it a higher rank and priority if it’s of interest to other individual users.

And now do you see why Facebook is encouraging you to tag a specific number of people who your update may be of particular interest to? And the number of people you can tag is limited to 10! So choose wisely.

#3. Engagement – How often do you interact and engage with other’s updates? If you often share, like, comment on other’s Profile or Page updates it is more likely that Your Own Page’s future updates will show in your friends and user’s Feeds too…Do you see a chicken and egg situation here?

– I see a Give and Take Scenario. In other words; Get more social, spend some time engaging with other people (Whom you claim to like, love and trust – i.e. Friends/family.) Facebook is measuring your popularity according to

how much you too give to others of your time!

#4. Type – What sort of content You most engage with. This includes text posts, videos, articles with links, photos, Quotes, infographs, etc. If you seem to watch lots of visual/video content, then Facebook will show more video updates in your newsfeed. Now note that the Facebook Algorithm for what you get shown is secret.

BUT that doesn’t mean you don’t check who you allow to access your information. This you do Via Settings, Apps permissions, whose content you engage with: Like, Share, Comment on!

And Yes the more apps you allow to sign thru Facebook to login via face book to connect to your profile or page, all contribute to what Facebook shows in your newsfeed as “Sponsored Ads.” So if you keep seeing that annoying Chicken soup advert…Yup you must have liked, commented on or even clicked on uncle Joe’s chicken soup video/image/post. Or somehow allowed it into your newsfeed, however remotely!

Its very important to get back to Socializing on Facebook. Find that time of day to engage with the people whom you would like to stay in front of. At the very least like their shares too. Get active on niche pages and groups. Share other Fan page content on your Fan page. Its one of Facebook’s criteria for Ranking your Page Strength and Reach! Its not about you on there its About Them. Serve Your Audience and You too will be Served.
