Personal photography today is primarily pursued for four overlapping reasons:

Photography isn’t anymore about a single image or photographic object. It is part of a chain of registered data.

The digital photography of our time is momentary, and therefore there is a high risk it never gets to museum and archives collections.

Another risk is lack of metadata. Few photographers, whether professional or amateur, supply their imagefiles with searchable keywords.

PROJECT GOALS

Bridging analogue and digital work practices

To describe and map the role of the photograph collections, current methods and workflows in museums and archives today,

To describe and map the role of social media and social digital photographs in society – how it affects collecting and disseminating of digitally born photographs.

To describe and map and the role of the collecting heritage organisations (as compared to other organisations/companies collecting and disseminating photographs) and how users perceive archives/museums.

Trough research and pilot projects define evolving methods for collecting and disseminating contemporary social digital photographs, in museums and archives.

The main differences between analogue and digital photo:

The Finnish Museum of Photography is national special museum for photography, its task being to promote and foster Finnish photographic art and culture.

Collections policy: ”to collect good, representative examples of all photographic cultures” → instead of thematic or regional focus, our interest in photography lies in collecting and exhibiting different genres of photography, different uses of photography and phenomena related to photography
