4. Positioning of Characters & Objects within a 4. Positioning of Characters & Objects within a frameframe

• Positioning within a frame can draw our attention to an important character/object

• A film-maker can use positioning to indicate relationships between people

• TASK: What does the positioning in the following images reveal about the characters/film:

IMAGE 1The image shows what possibly could be a couple that are seen to have had a disagreement. This is evident as they are both sitting on opposite ends of the sofa . The woman has a displeased face and is sat with her legs and arms crossed, her posture suggests that she is unpleased.

On the other hand the man looks disoriented, like he wants to make up. The way he is sitting suggests that he is unsure, almost as if he doesn't know what to do.

Their positioning shows what their current relationship is and also allows the veiwer to get a look at the area around the two. The positioning of eveything shows that the characters are experiencing problems in their relationship.

IMAGE 2The image shows a man with an ‘X’ like scar on his forehead which suggest that he has a dangerous job. The coat he is wearing suggests that he could be a detective.

While two characters are shown, it it mainly the man that is focused on. Naturally he will get more attention than the blurred woman in the background as he takes up more of the screen. His is positioned to stand infront of her whith his back to her as he holds a slightly troubled expression.

IMAGE 3The image shows two men in suits holding guns, standing closely together revealing that they are close or in a team. The two take up the majority of the screen making the audience pay most of their attention to them.

The guns and the background have a futuristic look to them showing that the film is a sci-fi or set somewhere in the future.

IMAGE 4The image shows a man standing in an army of soilders.He is positioned in the center showing that he is inportant/ has a large role in the film.

Seeing as their are soilders covering half of the image, with some appearing closer to the screen than others shows that they will definately be in the film and that they will play a part in it.
