In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Narrative:
The narrative creates such an atmosphere as our plot is non-linear and open ended. The most significant event of the media product that we created occurs at before the credits begin. This establishes our plot and adds more suspense.
Our media product as a whole uses forms and conventions in order to make our audience feel a certain way. We aimed to create feelings of:• Tension• Suspense• Confusion• Isolation
Genre:
Supernatural thrillers are supposed to have a propensity of creating the “edge of the seat” feeling/atmosphere for the audience
Various aspects of our film link to our chosen genre:
-Isolation is a major theme as the female ‘protagonist’ is ignored by others and is seemingly invisible
-Mise-en-scene, sound etc. also contribute
SUPERNATURAL THRILLER/MYSTERY
Cinematography:
Establishing shot of the school
Close up
We also used a number of tilts and pans in our film. All of these shots intend on creating suspense, confusion etc.
Editing:
We used continuity editing in our media product in order to create a sense of verisimilitude
Lighting: In post-production, we made a particular scene darker as we filmed earlier. This added a sense of verisimilitude as it implies that it is night in the scene.
Graphic match: We used this to heighten the audience’s feelings of confusion, tension and suspense
Sound:We also used diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound in order to suit the intended atmosphere of our film.
We added sound effects post-production to imply the occurrence of a car crash. The music, composed especially for our media product, ensues immediately after these effects are heard.
Diegetic sound, in the form of the news report shown on television in our film, is also used in order to construct a certain mood for the audience.
Speech (in the form of dialogue is used in order for the plot to become apparent and to progress)
Mise-en-scene:
Lighting: we used low key lighting in the indoor scenes of our film. This links to the general lighting used in other supernatural thrillers such as the Sixth Sense and What Lies Beneath
Setting: we filmed part of our media product on a quiet street
Props: we used flowers as they have connotations of death
Typography:
Iconography:
We used a simplistic font, similar to that used.
We are relying on the element of mystery and therefore we intended on making the genre appear slightly ambiguous when based solely on the typography of our titles.
We used some iconography (e.g. street lights) however upon reflection, we wish that we included more. We would probably have incorporated more if we made the rest of the film.
