Sun Saluter – Solar Tracking & Water Filtration
The Sun Saluter is quite a sophisticated passive solar tracker for small PV panels in tropical regions, which can collect up to 40% more energy than fixed panels on sunny days. Small solar PV panels are widely used in many regions to charge 12 V car batteries or solar batteries, which serve for lighting, small TV sets and the charging of cell phones for example. For optimal energy yield, the PV panels should always be aligned to the course of the sun, thus enabling an overhead tracking from east to west through the zenith in tropical regions. This is achieved by the Sun Saluter through the balancing of weight on both ends of the solar panel. A water container with controlled water flow varies weight on one side of the panel, thereby the balance of the solar panel changes to follow the sun.

As an add-on to the system, a sand filter unit is strategically placed below the water container. It catches the water that drains from the water container, and passively filters water by gravity. In contrast to conventional active solar trackers, the Sun Saluter does not need electricity, can be largely manufactured locally and does not require maintenance - a really sophisticated idea to collect more solar energy per day.
