In this guide I review 4 popular Local SEO software options

WebCEO, Upcity, Positionly, and Bright Local are the most popular Local SEO software options.They also represent a good diversity of features and price points, which are the two reasons I decided to include them in my review.

I chose WebCEO as the best Local SEO software for small businesses. My decision is based on WebCEO’s combination of a comprehensive set of features and ease of use.

I Recommend

In my opinion, WebCEO is the clear choice for small business ownersWho are serious about ranking high in the search engines. WebCEO gives you step by step instructions with a checklist of all the tasks you need to complete in order to get your site ranking higher in the search engines.

The downside of WebCEO is it’s cost.At $69 a month ($52 a month when paid yearly), it is around

twice as costly as Upcity, and around 4 times as costly as Positionly and Bright Local.

If you want your website to rank in the search engines, it’s important that it is set up correctly from a technical standpoint.

WebCEO shows you what if any broken links you have on your website, and checks a few other things like whether or not your redirects were done correctly, and if you have a proper sitemap.

UpCity reports on any technical issues that may affect your site’s ranking, through it’s SEO report card.

Positionly gives you a report with a dozen or so checks they do for the SEO effectiveness of their site.

BrightLocal’s Local SEO report offers the most comprehensive overview of your site’s current situation from a local ranking standpoint.

On Page OptimizationHow many times a keyword is used on a page, what the title and domain of the page is, and whether or not you use alt tags for your images are examples of “on page optimization”. 

This is one of the areas where WebCEO really shines. They show you exactly where your site has problems, and show you what needs to be done to fix it.

UpCity doesn’t offer much in the way of analytics around on page optimization.

Positionly gives you a checklist of the basic on page SEO things you need to get right in order for your site to rank.

Brightlocal gives you a high level summary of where you are going right and wrong from an on page optimization standpoint.

all about the links. 

Link Building

WebCEO gives you a list of over 100 places where you should submit your site, and even offers an automatic submission tool. They also give you a list of all the links your site is getting, along with a quality score.

This is one area where UpCity really shines. They give you a highly comprehensive list of sites that you should submit your website to.

Positionly shows you where your existing links are coming from and allows you to analyze your competitors links.

BrightLocal gives you the most comprehensive overview of where your site should be listed and getting links from, where it is currently listed, and how to go about getting listed/links from sites where you are not currently listed.

You need a way to track your SEO efforts so you know what’s working and what’s not.  Here’s what each tool offers.

WebCEO gives you the ability to track where your site ranks in the search

engines for up to 100 keywords, and how your site’s rankings for those keywords are changing over time.

Upcity allows you to track your rankings for your top 5 keywords, which is a much lower number than what the other packages offer.

Position tracking is what Positionly was really designed for. You can track up to 255 keywords, where you currently rank, how that ranking has changed over time, and how competitive that keyword is.

Bright Local gives you the ability to track up to 25 keywords. In addition to giving you your organic Google, Bing, and Yahoo Results Bright Local also tracks your rankings in Google Local, Yahoo Local, and Bing Local.

It doesn’t matter how powerful a piece of software is if it’s too complicated for you to use.  Here’s how each ranks in this important category.

Ease of Use

You may have to play with WebCEO for a few minutes to get the hang of things, but it’s well within the reach of anyone who spends any time online.

While not as easy as Positionly, Upcity is also very easy to use. It has a little bit less functionality than WebCEO so it’s harder to get lost, and the wizard walks you through everything step by step.

Positionly is the easiest option to use. There are not that many features of the software, so it’s hard to get lost and you can find everything you need right there on the dashboard.

Bright Local is not hard to use, but it is harder to implement the findings and recommendations of the software because it does not offer a step by step functionality.

All the products mentioned offer multiple price points. In general, options other than the first tier price point, are for those who do SEO on behalf of clients. 

Ease of Use

WebCEO offers 5 different versions of it’s software. The lowest level is the free version, which is fairly comprehensive. The next level up is their silver version, at $69 per month. This is the version we recommend.

Upcity offers a free trial, but no free version. The lowest price version at Upcity is their small business basic package, at $39 per month. This is the package that we reviewed, and should be sufficient for most small businesses.

At $19 per month for their most basic “bronze” option, Positionly is the cheapest option we reviewed. However, it is also by far the most limited in functionality.

At $19.99 Bright Local is just $0.99 more than the cheapest option Positionly, but offers exponentially more features. It has by far the most features, and is targeted to a more professional audience than the other options.
