Introduction
In this assignment, we are required to write a site visit report. This assignment is integrated with three modules, which are Measurement I, Building Materials and Construction Technology I. This site visit was held on last Thursday, which was on 19th of November. This site is located at Section 2A, Antara Gapi, Mukim Serendah, Hulu Selangor.
Before we go to the site, we were told that we have to wear a proper attire such as wearing long pants, and sport shoes also bring a safety helmet to ensure our safety at the site. During that day, we gathered at Taylor’s University to take the bus and get to the construction site. It took us around an hour to reach the destination.
After we had arrived our destination, we were briefed by the project manager who is Encik Mohd Sobri Bin Hj Abd Majid. The project manager gave us about 8 minutes briefing of the safety precaution in the site as we had to walk around to observe the site. We had to be aware on our safety and not to fall down which can lead to injury.
During that time, Encik Hafizi was in charged for explaining more details about the construction site. According to his information, this project consists of total 96 units double storeys of semidetached houses (40’ x 60’) . It cost RM44 Million. It needs 3 years to complete the project. The construction site had started from 8th of July 2014 and hopefully to be complete at 4th of July 2016. It has 4 different types of houses at the site which are Type 1, Type 2A, Type 2B and Type 3. There are 3 kinds of houses which are split up house, spilt down down and flat house. Each type of house use different foundation such as piling and pad footing. The reinforced concrete grade used for the construction site is Grade 30.

person in charge’s briefing.
8. To have an upclose view of the building structure as opposed to see in the drawings.
9. To learn how to communicate and work together in a construction site with the
professions.
10.To have an experience of exposure of the actual working environment on site.

Content / Technical Observation
We arrived the construction site at around 10am. Before we enter the site, I noticed that there was a notice board which is project signboard placed outside of the site. The project signboard states that this project consists of total 96 units of double storeys of semidetached house (40’ x 60’). The companies cooperating are :
Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS) (Developer) Zain Hamzah Architect (Architect) Wawasan Bersatu Sdn Bhd (Civil and Structural Engineer) ZNVA & Associated (Mechanical and Electrical Engineer) MCM Associates Sdn Bhd (Quantity Surveyor) AJCorp Sdn Bhd (Contractor)
The construction site is located beside the residential area which is located at
Section 2A, Antara Gapi at Hulu Selangor. It is fenced up with vertical hoarding around the construction site to avoid unauthorized person to entry the site.
Besides that, I can saw there are few temporary accommodation for the workers including a meeting room at the site. I also saw some familiar machine at the site construction. For example, mobile crane, excavator, concrete mixer and etc. I also can saw many different of materials that placed on the site which are reinforcement bars, part of scaffolding, formwork, cement bags, roof tiles, bricks, metal roof truss and others.
There are 2 type of foundation for this project which are piling and pad footing. A foundation is a lower portion of the building that transfers the gravity load to the earth. There are 4 types of houses which need to build at the site which are Type 1, Type 2A, Type 2B and Type 3. Each type of house used different type of foundations.
Type Type of foundation Type of house
Type 1 Piling Flat house
Type 2A Piling Split down house
Type 2B Piling and Pad Footing Split up house
Type 3 Piling Spilt down house 3
I was required to study how is the pad footing is constructed and what are the materials are involved in constructing a pad footing. I had gain my personal knowledge about the construction process by listening the person incharge who is Encik Mohd Hafizi. He had explained to us that how’s the foundations are constructed and the concrete grade used in this construction for pad footing.
Process of the pad footing is constructed :
Setting out Excavation Formwork Lean Concrete Reinforcement Concreting
Material involved in constructing a pad footing :
Concrete Grade 30 Reinforcement bars size in T12 and T16 Lean Concrete Grade 30 Formwork in plywood
First and foremost, it have to do with site clearance to clear the site of the
vegetation, brush wood, stumps of trees so that the site is clear enough to build a building at the site with the used of the machinery such as excavator, bulldozer and etc. After the site had clearance, the position of the pad footing is set up by the land surveyor according to the drawing plan dimension. Then, the cement powder is used to mark the size of the pad footing.
Then, it excavate the soil for 1200mm depth by using an excavator. A formwork is build according to the drawing plan of the dimensions with the materials of plywood. This is due to plywood formwork is the most common in using the facing panel. It is reusable and easy to be cut into shapes at the site. The size for the wood is 2 x 3.
After the formwork had built, it needs to recheck the plan for adjustment to make
sure that the size of the pad footing is correct. Adding the studs to prevent the formwork falling when the concrete is being poured.
4
A lean concrete is poured on top of the surface of the excavated earth. The lean concrete should be at a layer at least 50mm thick. The concrete grade for the lean concrete is Grade 30. The purpose of putting the lean concrete is to provide a smooth surface to the foundation of the concrete. It is also to prevent direct contact of foundation concrete to the soil. place some spacer blocks into the formwork before the reinforcement bar. The spacers are used to maintain the reinforcement in their proper position and prevent the rebars from corrosion.
Arrange the reinforcement bar like RC cage according to the drawing plan
provided. Placed the RC cage into the formwork. The size for the reinforcement bars used in pad footings are T12 and T16. Erect the reinforcement for the stump, and add more ties to the formwork so that it able to pour the concrete with Grade 30. When the concrete is hard, then the formwork can be dismantle.
5
For the materials are involving in constructing a pad footing are concrete,
reinforcement bar, lean concrete and formwork.
Formwork is a mould or a box into which wet concrete can be poured and compacted so that it will flow and finally set to the inner profile of the box or mould. It is a classic temporary structure at the construction site. For the material used for formwork is plywood. The advantages to use plywood formwork because it’s the most common on using the facing panel. It can be easily to be cut the shape on site. It is reusable. The wood size for plywood is 2 x 3.
Concrete is the one of the very important and widely used in the construction. Communities around the world rely on the concrete as a safe, simple and strong building material. The grade of the concrete use for the pad footing is Grade 30.
Lean concrete is a mix where the amount of the cement is lower than the amount of the liquid present in the strata. Lean concrete used to provide a level surface for the foundation. The purpose of putting the lean concrete is to provide a protection for the foundation from below the soil. The grade for the lean concrete is Grade 30.
Reinforcement bar is used for concrete reinforcement in project such as foundation. The type of the pad footing used is T16 and T12.

Learning Outcome and Conclusion
Throughout this site visit, it was a great experience for me for being the first time
to visit this kind of construction site. It was great opportunity for me to experience it, it
gains me extra information of the knowledge about how is the foundation of pad footing
and piling constructed, material used for the pad footing, types of the houses such as
split up house, split down house and identify the machinery and so on. I found out that
safety is important in the construction site. I learnt that we have to be patient , aware
and careful due to the weather condition also the risk will be happen on the site.
I able to identify various types of the building materials and technology on the
construction site such as concrete, clay, reinforcement bars, bricks, roof, machineries
and so on. Besides that, I had understand the basics of the construction process.
I understand the scientific principles and the construction of the buildings that had
underpin the design and construction.
I think that this experience is good for me because it an unique experience to
have an exposure to the actual working environment on the construction site.
This helped me to have a better understanding what am I going to face in the future as
a Quantity Surveyor. This site visit was benefits to me and I hope that I could have
more practical knowledge to prepare for my working in future.
