Introduction :• Ronnie Screwvala was born

in Mumbai in a Parsi family.

• Screwvala studied at Cathedral and John Connon School and Sydenham College.

• Screwvala is an Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist.

• He was the founder and CEO of UTV Group (UTV Software Communications, Bloomberg UTV, and UTV Motion Pictures), which was founded in the year 1990.

When opportunity knocks, open the door - Tooth Brush Business

• Ronnie Screwala’s first big project was a manufacturing unit to make toothbrushes, a far cry from the entertainment industry.

• Lazer Brushes, the company he set up in the early 1980s, became one of the biggest makers of toothbrushes in India.

Today, more than ever, you need to see the big picture faster, quicker and better than anybody else in the room,” says Ronnie.

Step towards the entertainment Industry :

• Ronnie also commenced his career by setting up a cable TV networking company in Mumbai, the firm was established in 1981.

• After that making advertisements and producing films and selling airtime on India's only national network known as Doordarshan.

• Soon after he was seen producing TV serials, his television dramas “Lifeline” and “Shanti” were an instant success among many housewives in 1994.

“Culture is the lifeblood of successful endeavours. Communication cements a

company’s culture,” says Ronnie.

United Televison Group (UTV)

• In 1990, Ronnie established UTV Software Communications.

• Actively involved in production, distribution of movies ,television family programs and web content.

• In 1996, it produced its first motion film "Dil Ke Jharoke Main” which was a disaster, in which he lost his Rs 10-crore investment.

• Then he decided to enter into TV broadcasting, he launched “Hungama” television channel.

• It featured Japanese animated shows and other regional language shows like “Doraemon”, “Pokemon”.

• Films like “Rang De Basanti”, “Harishchandrachi Factory”, “Peepli Live” and ”Barfi” represented India at the Academy Awards.

• Bagged best production house of the year in 2003 by Indian Telly Awards.

• UTV created innovative content and formats such as the daily soap opera “Shanti”, Youth channel Bindaas such as “Emotional Attyachar”.

• Co. won “Asian Television Awards

2005” for it’s programme “Gol Gol Gullam”.

• Movies produced by the group are “Dev D”, “Jodha Akbar”, “Udaan”, “Rajneeti”, “Guzarish”, “Heroine”, “P.K”, “Kick”.

Success story continues in Bollywood as well as in Hollywood :

• Some of the films are “Rang De Basanti” , “Khosla Ka Ghosla”, “Life In A Metro”, “A Wednesday”, “Fashion”, “Dev D”, “Kaminey”, “Kai po che” and “Delhi Belly”.

• Most of these films were not just commercial successes at the box office, but also content heavy.

• This set them apart from the rest Movies like “Rang De Basanti” and “Jodhaa-Akbar” proved to be commercial blockbusters in the Indian market which took UTV Motion Pictures Ltd. to new heights.

• Screwvala has been instrumental in building closer ties with Hollywood. He co-produced the Chris Rock comedy “I Think I Love My Wife “and M Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening”.

• UTV also backed Mira Nair's "The Namesake," and the film grossed more cash in the USA than any other Indian production has earned abroad to date.

Learnings :• The hard way through the flop movies

like ”Chance Pe Dance” ,”Joker” and “Himmatwala” taught him something.

• Lessons from failure should also be captured so that you do not make the same mistake twice, something Ronnie learned the hard way when Home Shopping Network did not work out as planned.

“Success comes from harnessing ambition, hunger, passion and potential,” says Ronnie.

Other Ventures :• In 2014, Ronnie Screwvala became the

owner of ”U Mumba - the Mumbai Kabaddi” that plays in the ”Pro Kabaddi League”.

• They were the runners up in the First year and winner of Pro Kabaddi League 2015.

• E-commerce ventures includes zivame.com, a lingerie e-store and lenskart.com an eyewear shopping portal and he is in the process of developing an e-shopping website for furniture as well.

• He has also forayed into online education with UpGrad, an online education platform offering new ages courses to working professionals

• Screwvala owns a private equity business called ”Unilazer Ventures Ltd”

Philanthropy Screwvala laid the foundation of Society

to Heal Aid Restore Educate (SHARE) for rural development in Maharashtra.

Swades, (earlier known as SHARE) in the last five years has provided drinking water to 39,000 people in 139 villages in rural Maharashtra.

Through Swades, Screwvala sees empowering communities with choices for themselves and their families, the capability of transforming their own lives.

On 30 September 2014, Screwvala was awarded the GQ Philanthropist of the Year for his work with Swades Foundation.

Ranked 78 among the 100 most influential people in the world on the Time 100 (complied by Time Magazine, 2009).

Listed amongst 25 Asia’s Most Powerful by “Fortune” Magazine, titled the Jack Warner of India by “Newsweek” and named Entrepreneur of the year by “Ernst & Young”.
