OpenIR - Democratizing Infrared Satellite Data
OpenIR is an ICT (information communication technology) that maps the risks and features revealed by satellite data. In developing countries the technical prerequisites and specialized knowledge required to use infrared and other satellite data (images) as a basis for environmental analyses, flood risk map generation, land use maps etc. are usually not available. OpenIR automatically generates thematic maps (e.g. flood risks) from satellite images. This can act as an important resource for governments, universities and NGOs. OpenIR’s initial component is a geo-server system that serves visible and infrared spectrum data into a web map layer. The inventors prototyped a Risk Map Builder to automatically output a flood risk map for any given area. This means infrared images will automatically be transferred onto a map providing the information requested (e.g. flood risk) thereby providing an important planning basis for communities.

This system uses binary decision trees to cross-reference environmental features and output a risk map. Currently, urban and vegetation-dense areas are cross-referenced with elevation to output a four-step map. The OpenIR business concept is not yet outlined.
