MoU signed between UAP and FATA

A memorandum of understanding was signed by the Vice Chancellor UAP, Prof Dr Zahoor

Ahamd Swati and Dr Jehangeer Shah, Director Livestock FATA for conducting a baseline survey

and collaboration for development of livestock based entrepreneurship; in line with the theme of

the Dairy Science Park—Display Center focused at Self-employment of the graduates associated

with safe food production for local consumers and the International Halal Meat Market.

Livestock and poultry constitute a major natural resource base, but could not get the due

attention in the development process. International Halal Meat Market comprises about

US$ 500 billion and is mostly contributed by the non-Muslim exporters. FATA has

possesses a huge scope reflected in table 2, based upon the sheep and goats populations

inhabiting the hilly and mountainous terrains of the various tribal agencies and FATA. A

major portion of the sheep, goats, cattle and poultry is reared under medium sized

holdings, which provides an opportunity for business development.

scientific program was organized in three sessions, each covering a specific range of topics in

relation to Prevention at the source.

The sponsors had desired to collaborate with the Dairy Science Park in establishing a Center of Excellence on Biorisk Management. A draft MoU was agreed upon on Biorisk Management Initiative for Pak-Afghan Region (BMI-PAR). The MoU is focusing on safeguarding the health of livestock and poultry farmers, products consumers and associated groups; developing standards and legislative guidelines for farming and processing units and service providers; strengthening interdisciplinary linkages in bio-risk management; alleviating

poverty and supporting entrepreneurship as a combat strategy for bringing peace and stability in the Region. A strategy was suggested comprising training of Senior level and middle level scientists, farmers, industry representatives, students and policy makers in biorisk management;

research on the biohazards in the regional livestock and poultry production, value addition and

marketing; consultation among stakeholders on the issues related to zoonotic diseases, the food safety, trans-boundary diseases and losses to the farmers income; capacity development of UAP in research and outreach programs in the region and evaluation of the small and medium sized livestock and poultry farms for public health safety and devising modules for minimizing the relevant threats.
