Introduction about Bogra Metal Enterprise SectorBogra Metal Enterprise Sector is a sector consisting of thousands of small, medium and marginal enterprises supporting the productivity of the Agriculture Sector of Bangladesh.

As per a survey conducted by BMEDP project in 1997, 85% of the irrigation pumps used in Bangladesh were manufactured in Bogra.

Project LocationBogra, Bangladesh

Bogra is a large district in Bangladesh located in Northern region. However, Greater Bogra indicates Bogra and Joypurhat districts.

Bogra town is the oldest town in Northern Bangladesh and also an industrial and commercial hub in Northern Bangladesh.

The town is famous for its foundry and light engineering industry sectors.

Duration:The project was in implementation during January 1997 to December 2001.

Partner and StakeholdersPartner:

Royal Netherlands Government was the development

partner of the project.

Funding:

The total project budget was around 1 million US$,

provided by the Netherlands government.

Bogra Metal Engineering Entrepreneurs Group (BMEEG), a

private sector trade association implemented the project.

About the Project Implementer, BMEEG

Bogra Metal Engineering Entrepreneurs Group

(BMEEG), a private sector trade association,

implemented the project with financial support from

Netherlands.

BMEEG was registered as a Company, limited by

guarantee, by the Register, Joint Stock Companies,

Ministry of Commerce, Government of Bangladesh with

Incorporation no. T.O. 336 (24)/94.

Bogra Metal Sector at a glanceBogra metal sector comprises of around 2,000 small and micro metal

enterprises (as already mentioned in previous slide, metal enterprises

include foundries, engineering workshops and similar) (source: Baseline

survey conducted by BMEDP in 1997) . Historically this metal sector has

been expanding in Bogra for over hundred years. After independence this

sector was squeezed a bit. However, again it started expanding since

eighties. During the inception of BMEDP in 1997 this sector was largest

metal sector in Bangladesh after Dhaka’s famous Dholai Khal region. The

specialization of Bogra’s metal sector is the production of different

agricultural machineries, and their spare parts.

BMEDP Project AchievementsThe share of Bogra metal sector in irrigation pumps and engine spares rose to 90% within 4 years (1997 to 2001)

250 entrepreneurs and 1,000 workers were trained in basic accounting, enterprise management, drawing and designing, machining, productivity, and others, including international training

A full fledged metal, pump and machine testing and servicing facility has been established on own land in BSCIC, Bogra

A number of feasibility studies and action research were conducted

Sub-contracting linkage has been established

Productivity cell has been established
