We are committed to long-term rehabilitation, helping communities affected by natural disasters or conflicts get back on their feet. Being an NGO in disaster management we also work to make vulnerable communities more resilient so that they can respond immediately if disasters occur. From the Gujarat Earthquake to the 2004 Tsunami, to the most recent Kerala floods and the Hurricane Amphan in May 2020 and the current Covid -19 pandemic, we’ve been there, responding to the immediate needs of those affected.

PREVENTING PEOPLES

World Vision India, an NGO in disaster management, has been integrating Community-Based DRR in all its programmes post Tsunami in December 2004. With our presence in 23 states and 3 union territories of the country, serving over 26 lakh children, it is our responsibility to build resilient communities.

We have been responding to the needs of communities affected by Cyclone Amphan in our projects in Kolkata and Bengal. These regions have already been reeling under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cyclone has turned out to be an environmental catastrophe and a social disaster, making the rehabilitation process for both the disasters a lot harder. The devastating effects of both the disasters will result in development-deficit if communities are not provided timely assistance to restore and strengthen their traditional livelihoods.

As an NGO in disaster management, our Strategic mandate prioritizes building resilient communities through a four-pronged approach which addresses: managing disaster risks — natural, manmade and environmental and climate change context; Social vulnerabilities; Economic vulnerabilities and Beliefs and value system.

Our ultimate goal is aimed at preserving life, preventing and alleviating suffering and strengthening resilient communities affected by any kind of disaster including slow onset. Our Area Development Programmers (ADPs) aim is to ensure that vulnerable communities are able to recover better. We also reinforce the importance of coordinated and effective mental health responding during emergencies.

SOCIAL RESPONSE

.

Through COVID-19 Relief Response, World Vision India has helped over 4.8 million people since March 2020. We have provided food assistance through cooked food and dry rations to over 565,751, people and 810,562 masks and 77,080 gloves sets to community volunteers and health care facilities.

As the country fights the second wave of COVID-19, our response will mainly focus on strengthening health care systems, providing psycho-social support through trained community volunteers, creating awareness around vaccination, making it accessible to all and enabling them to avail it and strengthening community preparedness to deal with the surge of COVID-19.
