DESCRIPTION

As a resident of Florida heating your home doesn't usually fall at the top of your list of concerns. For some people it never even crosses there mind. For some of us though, there are a few months, or weeks out of the year when the temperature falls and we get a little chilly. Since we live in a climate that doesn't leave us in the cold for too long we get are fortunate to have some options. One option is a heat pump system, which basically works as an Air Conditioner in reverse. They are very energy efficient, producing four times the energy it takes in. Meaning for every $1 of power it uses it produces $4 worth of heat. This option is a little more costly but in the long run more economical. Another option is a Straight Cool, this option is for systems that don't run heat very often but when it does the air is heated by coils inside the system. This option works much like a toaster where the electric coils are used to heat. A Straight Cool does draw more power so while it is not as energy efficient it is a lower cost option up front. Now, which one should you chose? We recommend that if you find that you are not comfortable in temperatures under 72 degrees, your more concerned with energy efficiency then up front cost, and tend to use the heat function more than 8-10 times per year then you should probably go with the Heat Pump. If you find that your still comfortable in cooler weather, are more concerned with the up front cost then the energy efficiency and don't turn your heat on more than 8-10 per year then a Straight Cool is for you. When you are considering getting a new unit please be aware of the size of the unit you currently have and the size of the unit your AC Contractor is recommending. If you currently own a 10 or 13 SEER unit and your contractor is suggesting a 16 SEER replacement, keep in mind you will most likely need to modify your duct work. With a larger unit pushing more CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air through your system you need to accommodate that with your duct work. Otherwise your running a marathon breathing through a straw, chances are you'll pass out after just a little while. Regardless of the unit you chose be sure that you are having it cleaned and maintained properly. Any system that is not properly cared for will begin to pull more power reducing its efficiency and increasing your electric bill. Consider your unit an investment and consistently maintain it to get the best longevity that you can. Your AC Service Provider should be your fountain of knowledge, pick their brain while they are servicing your AC Unit, ask them to show you what readings your system is showing and what it should be.
