My House, My Love, My Floor with Polished Concrete
• When I was a girl we had an old wooden floor, and a fundamental part of my childhood memories has to do with my parents warning us not to drag our chairs or anything else so that we don’t scratch the floor. “Lift!” I’d hear my mother yelling from the other room, as I dragged a chair into the kitchen to stand on so I could get a lolly from one of the cabinets.
• As a kid, I never understood why we had to have a floor that needed such careful attentiveness paid to it. I wanted to live in our house, not tip toe around it, being careful not to damage the floor. As I grew older I promised myself that I would never tell me kids not to drag a chair, the floor be darned.
• When it finally came time for my partner and me to start planning our own house, I shared this with him. I told him I don’t want a timber floor, and I don’t want anything on which our kids won’t be able to play without worrying about damaging the floor. My husband agreed, and so we turned to our designer and asked if she had any ideas.
• She recommended a floor called polished concrete, and gave us the number of a local Melbourne company called AUS Floor works that had this service and would help us plan what we wanted our floor to look like.
• I promptly contacted the recommended company and we met with them to have a look and hopefully decide on a floor. We were so pleasantly surprised by the options, many of which were truly beautiful, and decided on a high-exposure of aggregates with a semi-gloss. I was excited for the way it was going to work into our interior design plans and I knew that with a polished concrete floor, I would never have to warn my kids not to drag a chair.
• Now, having lived in the house for over two years, I am so happy I made that decision that I did!
