What is Aquaculture?

• Aquaculture is the farming and husbandry of aquatic organisms under controlled or semi-controlled conditions.

• It is a very important economic activity and a flourishing sector with varied resources and potentials.

Why Aquaculture ?

• Aquaculture is one of the most resource efficient ways to produce protein.

• Aquaculture provides excellent opportunities for employment and income generation, particularly in rural areas.

• It also helps maximize the use of idle or marginal lands in a number of developing countries where land is still the basis of wealth and social status and thus, general well-being.

Aquaculture Practice in India.

• In India, two types of aquaculture are practiced. These are freshwater aquaculture and brackish water aquaculture.

• Freshwater aquaculture involves the breeding of freshwater fish .

• Brackish water aquaculture involves breeding of fish that habitat the sea.

Fish Production in India

• India is the second largest producer of fish and largest producer of fresh water fish in the world.

• Fish production has increased from 41.5 lakhs tonnes (1991-1992) to 101.6 (2014-15) lakhs tonnes.

• The Fish production is estimated to be 7.54 million tonnes during the first two quarters of 2015-2016
