7 DIY BED BUG TREATMENT MISTAKES HOMEOWNERS MAKE

Beware the essential oil blends.

There are commercial essential oil blends out there that claim to be able to stop

bed bugs with a quick spray. Lab tests have proven that these oil blends will kill

bugs… but only in an isolated environment where they can't feed, like inside of a

plastic bag. In a real-life environment where bed bugs have access to food, it's been

proven that the oils are not effective.

Don't Don't stop sleeping in your bed.

This sounds… upsetting, but the reality is that if you discover bed bugs in your bed,

you need to stay there. Bed bugs are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale, and

if you move, they'll move with you, worsening the infestation.

Pay attention to clothes storage.

If you discover you have bed bugs, do not put washed clothes back into the bag

that you keep them in, for instance. The bag itself could be infested.

Do not mDo not move furniture.

You might be tempted to drag your mattress curbside, but just like not sleeping in

your bed, this will drag the pests throughout your home, making the problem

worse.

Don't look for the bugs during the day.

IfIf you suspect bed bugs in your home but can't find any, try looking at night. Bed

bugs feed at night, so you might not be able to find evidence of an infestation

during the day.

Not engaging in preventative maneuvers.

AAssuming that you managed to "get rid" of the infestation… you might find a few

days later that you wake up to a familiar cluster of itchy bumps. Did you know that

a single bed bug can lay up to 500 eggs? Mattress protectors and bed bug traps

are essential.
