Three Questions to Ask an Adoption Agency

ADOPTING A CHILD

Adoption is a gift of life, love and hope, and ensures a

future of love and opportunity for a child whose mother is

not able at that point in time, to take on the responsibility

of being a parent.

Providence Place have helped create close to 6,000 families

through adoption. We were the pioneers of open adoption in Texas

so an adopted child can understand his or her background and

birth mothers can keep contact with their babies.PROVIDENCE PLACE

WHERE DO DONATION FUNDS GO AT PROVIDENCE PLACE?

Many prospective donors ask this question before making a donation to a non-profit organization,

unsure of how their hard-earned money is actually going to be used. They want to help the

Providence Place mission of providing adoption services and life-skills training to young adults with

disabilities, but they also want to make sure their money is going into the right hands and is being

used for the proper purposes.

Occasionally, news reports will discuss how a charity somewhere sadly misappropriated funds for

inappropriate reasons and not for the benefit of their cause. Let us put your mind at ease and tell you

how Providence Place uses donations.

Where does the money go?

At Providence Place, donations go towards our various programs to help with day-to-day affairs.

Providence Place is not a business and therefore does not earn money from sales or deals, so it

relies solely on the donations of its selfless and loving supporters to operate. The majority of our

donations go directly into our programs Action Adoption, the Center for Higher Independence and

Ectropia. Funds help pregnant young women get the prenatal care they need and provide housing for

young adults with disabilities while they learn how to become more independent. These funds are the

only way by which the programs can operate and help us place more children with more loving

families.

What is left over from these donations goes towards administration costs, such as paying our

wonderful employees, and fundraisers to help raise more money and awareness for our organization.

We work to keep overhead costs low so we can do more for the San Antonio community.

How much?

So how much does Providence Place need to operate? To see figures of how our money has been

used over the years, including our official report for 2013, please peruse our annual reports. Here you

will find our sources of revenue, assets, expenses, and much more.

Like any non-profit, we can always use additional funds for operations, no matter how small. If

donating isn’t an option for you at this time, you can always spread the word, volunteer your time, or

perhaps offer a prayer for support. Providence Place simply would not be around if it were not for the

love and support you have given us over the years. When it comes to donations, each dollar and

each person matters, and Providence Place pledges to use your donated money to educate, care,

and find loving homes for our children.

Adopting a child is an important decision that requires careful consideration. Are you contemplating

THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK AN ADOPTION AGENCY

If you are considering adopting a child, you are already keenly aware of all the uncertainties and

unknowns. You have probably asked all these questions and more:

Will the birthmother change her mind? How do I know the status of the child? How long will the

adoption process take? What are the required legal processes and how can I check that I have

completed them all? What will the total costs be?

If you have decided to use an adoption agency to facilitate the new addition to your family, they

should be happy to help answer all your questions, and there are some questions that they should be

made to answer no matter what. Here are three broad questions that you should ask of an adoption

agency. They will help you to verify whether they are a qualified provider of adoption services.

Adoption laws are in fact quite complicated. They can change depending on which state you live in,

and based on the state that your prospective child lives in. There are forms and contracts to

complete, submit, and track; you may also need to work with various authorities in the courts. An

adoption agency that is on top of the necessary adoption services will be able to provide answers and

education about your role in all of these processes.

It will also be important to have an idea of what legal services are not covered by the adoption

agency. If you visit your state’s official website, you can learn more about the laws in your area. With

this information, ask your adoption agency if they have familiarity navigating the laws, and what their

success and failures have been in meeting them.
