I want to take a small step away from Air Conditioning Units today to talk about another product that we offer that has some pretty significant changes come its way in 2015. I’m talking about water heaters. In April of 2015 the Department of Energy is mandating that all water heaters be more energy efficient. What does that mean? • Any water heater that is 55 gallons or less will need to be upgraded to a unit that is 95% more efficient than the current unit. • Any water heater that is 55 gallons or more will need to be upgraded to a unit that is 200% more efficient that the current unit. While this may seem a little overwhelming it is actually a blessing in disguise, you see currently standard water heaters require 4500 Watts every time it starts up. To put this in perspective, a normal household light bulb is 100 watts so imagine turning on 45 lamps at one time, that’s the kind of power you need each time your water heater starts up. That is a major pull of energy. The new Heat Pump (Geo Thermal) water heaters that are more efficient use merely 550 watts (5 ½ light bulbs) to start up. The difference between the two water heaters (standard vs. heat pump) is much the same as comparing the straight cool unit to the heat pump unit to heat your home (read more about that here). The standard water heater today uses coils to heat the water, much like a hair dryer uses the coils in the back to heat the air as it comes through. The Heat Pump (Geo Thermal) pulls the heat from the surrounding air and transfers the energy into the water. It does have the electric component as a backup as well. By switching to a Heat Pump water heater not only will you be in compliance with this new standard and saving energy you’ll also be saving money. It has been reported that home owners that switched to this type of water heater saved $300 - $400 per year, which equates to ±$36.00 / month on their electric bills. To me that’s a significant amount of savings. Basically the new Heat Pump water heater will pay for itself! A few more great benefits include, a lower HER Score (Home Energy Rating), the lower your HER score the more efficient your home is, and a better appeal to buyers. A longer warranty, currently most standard water heaters come with a 6 year warranty. The GE Geospring™ currently comes with a 10 year warranty, and a representative from GE will be the ones to come out and do any warranty work. Now if that’s not enough great information to help you see why switching now is a great idea, let me give you a little tip. Once this mandate goes into effect April 2015, prices for the new Heat Pump water heaters are going to sky rocket. You’re going to have to do it anyways, so you might was well do it when the price is right.
