The text in the holding page
The holding page text should be at least three hundred words, using a decent dollop of researched keywords.
Consider using the SEOQuake browser plugin, accompanied by Google’s Keyword Tool to help you identify keywords.
If you already have active social network accounts such as a Twitter profile, Facebook page or LinkedIn business profile or YouTube channel, then you could decide to link to them.
The images in the holding page
Forget the work person with their shovel, but instead use an image related to your domain or future website.
Why not include a related image and alt tags?
It will help strengthen your page search engine optimisation.
Example: A tree surgeon holding page could have an image of a tree surgeon treating a tree, then related researched keywords as the alt tag, not forgetting the filename should be keyword related i.e. tree-surgeon-uk.jpg
Design considerations
Another area where most holding pages let themselves down is hardly any consideration for presentation or design optimisation.
The reality is even when people think a holding page could last just a matter of weeks, time-scales can slip.
Spending an extra ten or twenty minutes working on the design could be worthy of your time.
Page layout
A holding page is often a large one layer / column area with a short piece of dull text with minimal presentation.
Consider using a slightly more complex layout, one area for your main content, but a secondary area for any external links such as social networks or other content.
Don’t clutter up a single area, even a simple page layout can be designed so that the content is clearly presented.
Plus allow the wording and brand / house style to shine through.
Colours
If you already have colours as part of a house style or branding, your holding page should reflect these colours, reinforcing your brand from day one on the domain.
If you don’t have a house style, you might want to read our creating a house style article.
Image Optimisation
Each image should be optimised, even if it is just one image. Making sure the holding page loads quickly is important.
