2. Which is really the best buy? ? 3. Introduction This report will include experimental data which will show testing of various concentrate detergents on the market, all of which will be scientifically compared and rated. 4. COMPARISON OF VARIOUS CONCENTRATE DETERGENTS EXPERIMENT www.cleaningproducts.net.au 5. Aim The aim of the experiment is to determine, through extensive testing the best quality and value for money concentrate detergent on the market. Also to determine which is the least value for money and worst by all criteria. 6. Method 1.The following materials were obtained: marking pen (water proof), scissors, small towels, 6 500-600mL bottles (desirably similar in shape), 60 pieces of white clear cloth 15cm X 15cm (cotton preferred), large stack of newspaper, (preferably outdoor) clothes line, paper to record information on, pen, tomato sauce/ketchup, used cooking oil, red wine, coffee, marbles, digital photo camera, dirt, 6 detergents. 7. Method 1 8. Method 2.60 pieces of cotton were cut from a large piece all measuring 15 by 15 cm. They were then laid on newspaper to prevent ruining underneath material. Ketchup was poured out into a small lid, measuring roughly a teaspoon and evenly among 12 of those cotton pieces. The lid was then cleaned and wine was poured into it up to halfway, roughly half a teaspoon and then 12 pieces of cotton were evenly stained with the wine this same way. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. Method 3. 12 more pieces of cotton were stained using used cooking oil with a tablespoon on each piece. A strong cup of coffee was then made with 2 spoonful of sugar and mixed well. After a few minutes a teaspoon was used to stain another 12 pieces of cotton using coffee and left. 17. 18. 19. 20. Method 4. A handful of dirt was taken from my backyard, mixed with water in a cup and a teaspoon was applied to 12 more cotton pieces.

  • All of these were left overnight.

21. 22. Method 6.The detergents were all given a separate labelled bottle. 4 marbles were added to each of the bottles. Then, 6 bottles were filled with hot/cold (which ever was needed for the experiment) water, 500 ml each. A dosage was measured and added to each of the bottles from each of the detergents. 23. 24. Method

  • The stained cloths from each group were placed into the bottles and sealed tightly. These were packed in a small box and padded with towels then shaken for 20 minutes straight.

25. After these were taken out, rinsed and hung to dry, all in a row in order to identify them later. 26. The bottles were washes thoroughly and the same process was repeated with cold water. 27. 28. 29. Washing Process 30. Method 10.After both water types were done, this process was repeated with each type of staining so that all cloths would be washed and hung out to dry. 11. Results were left over night to dry then taken down to be compared and ordered from 1 to 6. 12. After a thorough drying overnight the samples were taken down and thoroughly compared to each other and ordered from 1 to 6. 31. Method 13. Then 6 more pieces were cut andstainedwith all of the above on each pieceof cotton 15 by 15 cm. These wereallowed over night to stain and werethen put into the bottles the same way asbefore. These were allowed to soak for24 hours. The results were rinsed andwere put out to dry in the same mannerpreviously then compared and rated. 32. 33. 34. Measuring Dose/Wash Direct Variation Formulay/x = k where k = constant So therefore:y = amount of water in wash x = recommended dosage per 1 spoon given in detergent Also, the number after which this is multiplied by is the amount of small lids full, that fit into 1 recommended spoon in detergent. 35. Conclusion In conclusion it is fair to say that Enzymo is the most value for money quality product out of the 6 tested. The best is undoubtedly Cold Power performing great under all conditions and although of its high price it is still the leader in all stain removal while Hurricane is the worst unless its dosage per wash would be increased to at least twice the amount as recommended. Bio Zet is the most expensive out of the lot and proved to be very middle. 45. Problems Encountered

  • Measuring actual amount of detergent which would be put into the bottles

46. Solved by using small lid and ratios 47. Staining equality 48. Solved by using teaspoon and small lid 49. Come up with a method which would accurately get results through washing 50. Solved by box 51. Problems Encountered

  • Copying large file onto the school network.

52. Solved by using zip drive. 53. Count amount recommended on the box for a 500ml amount. 54. Solved by using thedirect variationformulae. 55. Discussion in Relation to Hypothesis and Aim The results of this experiment show that generallythe theory that higher prices mean better quality of the product proves true but it can be seen in Enzymo for example that it is a fairly good detergent but of very low cost. This is becauseClean Plus (www.cleanplus.com.au) does not spend on the advertising of its product and therefore this allows the products value to remain low although this does not in any way influence its performance. 56. Discussion in Relation to Hypothesis and Aim Also because the concentrate detergent market is evidently expanding while normal detergents are becoming less and less used, simply because concentrate allows more washes for the consumers money, companys are trying to force their product into this niche-like market although their products do not meet all of this markets criteria. These companies label their products with small ratio of detergent per wash to attract consumers as well as write Super Concentrate or Concentrate on the front although to achieve an equal level of performance similar to the other concentrate detergents they must increase their recommended dosage which they do not. This is the case with Hurricane. 57. Thank You I would like to thank my dad for helping me and supporting me throughout this whole experiment. He helped me organize the whole thing and if there was one thing I learnt is organization and planning. I think that was the main part of the assignment, because if not for planning it would be impossible to complete. I also learnt that ideas always change but for the better as they get more realistic and interesting. 58. Thank You Testing was fairly hard and time consuming but the results show the difference in quality of detergents quite clearly and answer the question quite easily. I dont really think that I could have improved the experiment that much but more accuracy could have helped measuring the dosages, perhaps with really precise scales. Human error of course came into consideration when performing the tests.
