IntroductionDo you want to be happy? I’m guessing your answer to that question is likely to be yes. Who doesn’t want to be happy? Happiness is a very nice feeling. Most people would travel around the world to find it or even pay hundreds of dollars to let a psychologist tell them how to achieve happiness. Right now you probably have millions of things running in your mind. You’re thinking of ways and things that can make you happy: a job promotion, a nice car, cool friends, a check for a million dollars or a round trip ticket to an exotic destination. Of course, I don’t speak for everyone when I say these things. Your idea of pleasure might be greatly different from mine. I, myself, like to acquire antiques and old records. I enjoy writing and I find it fulfilling whenever I get appraised for my work. Those are the things that bring me great pleasure, but they don’t necessarily bring me lasting happiness because I know I cannot keep them with me forever. My antiques could get broken, I could lose my old records, my readers could get tired of me, but I don’t let it get to me because my happiness does not depend on the external world. I do not let events determine how I feel.

Understanding EnlightenmentThe Definition of Enlightenment and the Different

StagesYour basic life, which is to be born and to die. In between that, you may experience joy, bliss, and happiness or pain, loss, and misfortune. When you are enlightened, you wake up to a great reality that none of these things matter. Sadly, this is a realization that most people never receive in their lifetimes. Enlightenment is the act of rising above one’s thought and not falling back to a level below though like that of an animal or a plant. It means surrendering to the fact that nobody is surrendering to anything. You realize that you can do everything but you don’t have to do anything. It is the recognition that the problem and the one who seems to have it are both imaginary. You can just be. Enlightenment gives you a strong feeling of calm, clarity and purity.

Mindfulness and the Present (FOCUS)

Mindfulness is being aware of your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and surroundings without judging them as good or bad. It is living in the moment and awakening to experience instead of letting your life pass you by. Mindfulness is when you wake up and live in harmony with yourself and the world, examine who you are, and question your view of the world and your place in it. It is when you cultivate appreciation of the fullness of each moment you are alive and being in touch. When practicing mindfulness, your thoughts focus on what you sense at the present moment rather than remembering the past or imagining the future.

Awakening Consciousness and Enhancing Mindfulness

In this chapter, we will discuss how to awaken consciousness and enhance mindfulness. Most people walk on this earth with an unconscious mind sitting atop their shoulders. They go about their daily routines without realizing that most of their actions and decisions are subtly controlled by their unconscious mind. You might say, “But I am conscious. Look at me. I’m reading this book and I was fully conscious with my decision to buy it.” Ah, yes. But that is not the kind of consciousness I’m talking about. I’m referring to the kind that affects your way of reacting to situations and perceiving events. The one that consumes your train of thought which in turn affects the way you behave around others and certain situations. Why is it so important to awaken consciousness? What good does it contribute to your life? For one, your level of consciousness is a good indicator of how well you deal with life’s challenges. When faced with a problem, the unconscious person will become more unconscious while the conscious person tends to become increasingly conscious. You can use the challenge as a wake-up call or you can let it pull you into an even deeper sleep.
