When things are going nicely at home it's easy to assume that you're making all of the right choices as a parent. We have all been told that selflessness is the most important quality for a parent to have and that the children always come first. It's true that every parent has to make sacrifices but you also have to ensure that your own needs get met. Parents who don't see to their own needs just burn themselves out and that has a bad effect on their ability to parent effectively. It is vital that you make sure to take time for yourself. This means that it is also vital to take some alone time with your partner or spouse. There is no doubt that your kids are incredibly important to you but they do not need to be your only focus all of the time. This is not good for you or them because it makes it harder for them to develop their own resources. Lots of kids today are in the habit of spending each and every spare moment in front of their television sets, computer screens or on their phones. For this reason alone, one of the skills you need to have as a parent is to teach your kids how to play freely. In addition to the organized activities for which you have signed them up, don't forget how valuable old fashioned play time at the park, on the playground or during play dates with friends can be. Many studies have proven that children who don't play often enough are far more likely to develop behavioral conditions like Attention Deficit Disorder, depression and aggression. Taking time on the weekends as a family to play outdoors (going swimming, hiking, etc) is a great way to help facilitate this. There are lots of parenting skills that can help make your job a lot easier while simultaneously helping your kids learn very important life lessons. It is also important to learn how to apply these skills in ways that are good for your son or daughter's age and personality.
