• Topical– Organization according to speaker’s

discretion, recency, primacy, or complexity

• Spatial– Organization according to location or

position

• To show cause and effect– Organization by discussing a situation and

its causes or a situation and its effects.

• Problem and solution– Organization by first discussing a problem

and then various solutions.

HARD/SOFT EVIDENCE

• Soft evidence includes hypothetical illustrations, descriptions, analogies, and opinions.

• Hard evidence includes factual examples and statistics.

• Consider organization that moves from soft evidence to hard evidence.

SUMMARIES

• A summary is a recap of what has been said.

• Internal summaries are recaps of what has been said so far in the presentation.

• The final summary is a recap of all the main points, usually just before or during your conclusion.

OUTLINING YOUR PRESENTATION

• Preparation outline– Fairly detailed outline of central idea, main

ideas, and supporting material– Standard outline format

• Within each level, make headings grammatically parallel.

• Delivery outline– Condensed and abbreviated outline from

which speaking notes are developed
