Step 01: Document Setup Upon

opening Inkscape, locate the Menu Bar. Select File > New > Letter. This will determine the Page Size. Letter is 8.5 by 11 inches.

Step 02: Colored Background Now we will make 2 Rectangles that go side by side. Select the Rectangle Tool from the Tool Box.

(Flipped horizontally for the purpose of the Tutorial)

Step 03: Rectangle Setup

Then go up to the Tools Control Bar. Set the Width to "4.24", Height to "11", Rx to "0", Ry to "0" and then change the last box to "in" for inches.

Then draw the Rectangles on the canvas.



Step 04: Fill and Stroke To the bottom left of the screen is the Fill and Stroke Box. If you

double click on it, the Fill and Stroke Window will appear. However, if you right click the Fill Color in this Fill and Stroke Box, a menu to edit the Fill will pop up. Vice versa, if you right click the Stroke Color, a menu to edit the Stroke will pop up.

Step 05: Color Palette Just above the Fill and Stroke Box is the Color Palette.

It should show the Default Inkscape Colors. To verify, click on the Arrow to the bottom right of the screen.

A Color Menu will pop up. If you wanted to change the colors that you see, you could select one of the other options on the menu.



Step 06: Fill Both Rectangles

Using the Select Tool click on the 1st Rectangle and set both its Fill and Stroke to "Black" and the Fill and Stroke of the 2nd Rectangle to "Maroon". It should look like this:

Step 07: Add Text

Select the Text Tool on the Tool Box and click anywhere on the canvas and start typing your blocks of Text. In this case we will start with the Title which is "Aiden's Digital Photography".

Go to the Command Bar and select the Text Properties Icon

Step 08: Text and Font Window This will open the Text and Font Window. Here you can change the Font Family, Style, Size, Layout and Line Spacing. You will also be able to see a Preview of your modifications.

In this case the Font Family is "Disko" which is a free Font that was downloaded at www.FontFreak.com.

The Font Size is "56", Style is Italic and Layout is Centered. Click Apply then Close.

Step 09: Change Text Color Using the Select Tool, select the Text then go down to the Color Palette and right click on the Color "White" and select Set Fill, this will change the Text to White.

Then drag the Text to the desired spot on the flyer. It should look like this:

Step 10: Add New Text Next we can add the remaining Text to the document. The Font used is "Segoe Print" which you can also get at www.FontFreak.com. Be sure to also make this Text White by setting the Fill to "White".

Step 11: Create Star

Next we will create a Star with a Drop Shadow. To do this, click on the Star Tool on the Tool

Box. Then go up to the Tool Control Bar. Select the Star Icon, set Corners to "5" and Spoke Ratio to "0.550". Then draw the Star anywhere on the canvas.

Step 12: Change Star's Color Use the Select Tool to select it then go down to the Color Palette and right click on the color "White" and select Set Fill, this will change the Star to White . Repeat these steps and set the Stroke to "White" as well. Then drag the Star to the appropriate place on the document. It should look like this:

Step 13: Change Star's Opacity To the bottom left of the screen is the Fill and Stroke Box.

If you double click on it, the Fill and Stroke Window will appear. While the Star is still selected, set its Opacity to "33.5" instead of "100".



Step 14: Filter Effects Next we will add the Drop Shadow. To do this, go to the Objects Menu > Filter Effects. This will open the Filter Effects Window.

Step 15: Rename Filter To create the Fill Effect, click on New. In the Filter Column, you will see Filter1.

To change this Text to Drop Shadow, right click on Filter1 and select Rename.

Type in "Drop Shadow".



Step 16: Add Effects Then move over to the Add Effect Button, select the Down Arrow and select 3 Effects, Gaussian Blur, Offset and Merge, clicking Add Effect after each one.

Step 17: Gaussian Blur Connection Click on the Little Gray Triangle on the right side of Gaussian Blur, while holding the left mouse button down, drag a line to Source Alpha.

Step 18 : Offset Connection Click on the Offset Triangle and drag to Gaussian Blur if this one is not already done for you.

Step 19: Merge Connection Connect the 1st Merge Triangle to Offset and the 2nd Triangle to Source Graphic.



Step 20: Gaussian Blur - Standard Deviation Then select the Gaussian Blur Effect and set the Standard Deviation to "10.5" in the Effect Parameters Tab.

Step 21: Offset - Delta X and Y Then select the Offset Effect and set Delta X to "6.0" and Delta Y to "6.0".



Step 22: Apply Drop Shadow Click on the Select Tool, click on the Star, then go back to the Filter Effects Window and select the Check Box for Drop Shadow in the Filter Column. The result should look like this:

Step 23: Royalty Free Images Next we can finish up the document by adding Images to it. I downloaded photos from these 3 sites that have Royalty Free Photos to use without any hassel.

Step 24: Import Images To add Images go to File > Import. You can then select the file location and click Open.

Using the Select Tool, Resize the Images as needed.

Next create a White Border for each Image. To do this, select the Rectangle Tool.

Draw a Rectangle around the Image. Set the Stroke of this Rectangle to "White" and the Fill to "No Fill".

In the Fill and Stroke Window, select the Stroke Style Tab.

Change the Width to "0.04" inches.

Step 25: Give Image Border Next Group the Image and the Rectangle. Select both by holding down the Shift Key and using the Select Tool.

Then go up to the Command Bar and select the Group Button . While still selected, go to theFilter Effects Window and select Drop Shadow.

Repeat these steps for every Image, then place on the document in the desired location.

Step 26: Arrange Images

Be sure to make use of these Buttons on the Tool Control Bar.

They are "Lower to Bottom", "Lower one Level", "Raise one Level", and "Raise to Top". Use them to Lower or Raise your Images where necessary.

Step 27: Save File This is what the finished document will look like. Go to File > Save. It will be saved as a Scalable Vector Graphic (svg) file by default.
