How to Upgrade from Windows 8 to
Windows 8.1?
It’s always good to stay up to date with technology especially when there is a free software upgrade being
offered, everybody loves it! On 17th of October, Microsoft officially announced the release of Windows
8.1 for its users worldwide. The consequences have been different for various user levels. For instance,
the majority of Windows 8 users are able to upgrade free of cost to the new operating system while the
rest have to buy Windows 8.1 for use. Things haven’t been smooth for Microsoft still, a few hours ago it
took down Windows RT 8.1 upgrade option for the relevant Windows 8 RT users due to some technical
issues. Read More
The Outliers Not everyone can upgrade to Windows 8.1 at this moment in time. Before initiating your preparations to
upgrade, double check your eligibility otherwise you’ll become one of the many users who had their
expectations hit.
- Users having older operating systems (like Windows XP, Windows 7 and so on) other than Windows 8
or Windows 8.1 Preview can’t upgrade free of cost to Windows 8.1. The solution is to buy the new
Windows for either 119.99$ or 199.99$ depending on your need and budget. You can view the
comparison, pricing and finally buy Windows 8.1 directly from here.
- Quite recently users of Windows RT 8 experienced issues while upgrading to Windows 8.1 which came
into notice resulting in the temporary removal of the upgrade option for RT users by Microsoft. The
following notice has been put up, a few hours ago, by Microsoft: To perform a clean installation of
Windows 8.1, follow the steps highlighted here.
The Pre-Requisites As highlighted earlier, having Windows 8 isn’t a guarantee that you’ll be able to upgrade to Windows 8.1
immediately. Here are a few pre-requisites you must consider before expecting the upgrade:
Is Your Windows Up To Date?
Go To PC Settings and click the Windows Update option. Then, hit on
the Check For Updatesbutton followed by Install to actually bring the
updates to your system. Remember to maintain a stable internet
connection, make sure that your laptop or device is plugged in, and that
you restart your system after installation.

Have you configured your Microsoft account yet? Without doing this, you won’t be able to initiate the upgrade from the
Store app.
The Method - Remember to create a backup of your files and folders, before you
proceed with the upgrade.
- Go to the Start Screen and click or tap the Store tile. You will see a
Windows 8.1 upgrade option in the Spotlight section. If you can’t find this option or detail, refer to the
sections discussed earlier within this post.
- Or you can click the download button from Store app using this direct link.
- The update process will take place in the background which means business as usual till
theinstallation and configuration begins. If the download (over 3.5Gb) gets disturbed, you can restart it
from where you left off till the final completion.
- Restart your system, and configure your SkyDrive or Microsoft Account and License settings to begin
the Windows 8.1 experience.
If you face any issues in upgrading to Windows 8.1, feel free to mention your queries in the comments
section.
