Chances are your business has a Google + Local listing even if you never set one up. Start by searching your brand on Google to see if one already exists. If you see a listing for your business, click the Google +page and look for the “business owner?” link, then follow the instructions to claim it. If you can’t find it, then you can start a new one at www.google.com/places.

Once you have Claimed or Created a Google + Local page, the next vital step is to verify it. Until you verify your listing, it won’t be considered “trusted” since Google won’t actually know you are the REAL business owner. As a result the listing won’t appear in the categories you selected.

The verification process is easy, but it takes time. Follow the instruction when setting up your listing or click the verify link when you are logged into your Google + Local account. Sometimes you will have the option to phone verify, but most likely you will wait 2-3 weeks for a postcard.

Optimize your Business Title – Your title in Google + Local should be your business name, and a reference to what town you are in. For instance, if you own a franchised business, including a location keyword wouldn’t hurt to distinguish yourself from other franchises.

Including keywords in your Google + local page description - Be sure to write a brief description of your business and make sure to add a keyword or two. NOTE, just don’t go overboard with the keywords.

Choose the correct categories and make your listing 100% complete - Choosing the correct categories is important, and you can include up to five- but make sure they’re relevant to the services or products you carry or provide.

Adding images, videos, links to your social media pages, hours and any additional information can make your listing more engaging.
