How to Make Simple Quilt Hanging Loops

1. Start with a 3" wide piece of 100% cotton fabric. This can be the same fabric the quilt was bound with or a contrasting color.

Hanging loops should be placed every 15 to 20 inches. So to deter-mine how long to make your 3" piece of fabric, take the width of your quilt and divide it by 15. The take the resulting number, add 1 to it and multiply it by 8. So for a quilt that is 60" wide the math is as follows: 60/15 = 4 4 + 1 = 5 5 x 8 = 40" long strip of fab-ric. I always add an extra few inches - so I would start with a 43" long strip of fabric.

2. Fold the 3" strip of fabric in half the long way lining up the raw edges. Sew the length of the strip with a 1/8" seam.

9. Next, cut an 8" length off the strip you created. This is one hanging loop.

11. Safety pin the hanging loop to the back of the quilt on the binding. Make sure that the pin does not go all the way through the entire binding. The pin should not be seen from the front. If you want a shorter loop, just move the attachment point up the loop and have more of the hanging loop hang below the binding.
