In this series, Sumeet Nagdev will teach you some basic positions of the Indian folk dance called Chau. Here, you will learn some modern Chau-style movements on a Bollywood song, ‘Beera’ from the movie ‘Raavana’, as it has the perfect tribal feel and is high on energy.

Step 1: We will start by standing in first position with the arms relaxed.

Step 2: Step the right foot out with your hands reaching out up above your shoulders and spiral your fingers in a very Indian style. Look up between your hands.

Step 3: Now do the same thing on the other side. Make sure to bend your knees and lift off the floor on every transition.

Step 4: Repeat step 1.

Step 6: Step the right foot out again as if you are stomping your foot (but softly) and rise up with your arms flexing. Look up and ensure that your left foot is turned out and bent outwards. This position of the leg is called an attitude.

Step 7: Come back into second position with your legs, bend your knees slightly (this is called a plie) and open your arms with your fingers spiralled outwards.

Step 8: Repeat step 5 on the opposite side.

Step 9: Repeat step 6.

Step 10: Transfer the left foot in front and flex it while the right elbow flows in the downward direction towards the knee.

Step 11: Ball change i.e. switch to the other foot by transferring your weight. Make the same pose as step 9 with the right foot and the left hand. Step 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16: Repeat steps 9 and 10 alternately.
