Cup Noodles Many of us have eaten all kinds of instant noodles. Some examples are clear ramen, spicy curry ramen, flaming hot kimchi noodles, and a local favorite, sweet and tangy pansit canton. We see them all over the world and eat them, but did you know, 55 yrs. ago, instant ramen never even existed??? One day, in 1957, a man in Japan named Momofuku Ando was in a lot of trouble. His business went bankrupt, and he had to find a way to make money to feed his family. Suddenly he had a great idea. He remembered during World War II, seeing long lines of people

waiting to buy ramen. The noodles were steaming in gigantic pots sold by street vendors. Momofuku worked obsessively for a whole year without a single day off until he came up with his magic invention. Dried noodles that turn into tasty and chewy noodles when added with hot water.

Momofuku became an instant success in Japan. People were amazed because with a little bit of money and a cup full of hot water you can make a bowl of ramen. 13 yrs. later Momofuku took a trip to America. He discovered that Americans use forks and mugs instead of chop sticks and bowls. He then decided to pack the noodles in a cup, instead of the ordinary plastic wrap.

This was how Cup Noodles were invented. The dry noodles and flavorings are put in a

disposable cup, so everything is complete, just add hot water. But there was a problem in the factory. When the machine dropped the noodle in to the cup, it will tip over to one side. One night he dreamed about feeling dizzy and thought his room was upside down. Then he woke up, and got his solution. He realized he needed to put the cup over the dry noodles and then turn it over right side up. Every cup of noodle fits perfectly.

34 yrs. later he invented space ramen, instant noodles that astronauts can prepare and eat in space. His dream to create space meals became reality. Even at 95 yrs. old, he was always thinking of ways to improve his noodles and find new ways to use them.

In 1999, Momofuku established his first Cup Noodle Museum. There are three in all. The

museums tell people about his accomplishments, how he started out in a difficult situation, and how he became extremely successful in the end. His purpose was to encourage kids to dream, create, and to work hard for their future. His museum has many interesting displays, like a replica of the dilapidated shack that he worked in, the mural of instant noodles pack from all over the world, a movie theater that showed his animated biography. The best part of all was the personal cup noodle factory, where everyone gets a chance to decorate, season, and package their very own cup noodle creation. It seemed like the adults enjoyed the museum as much, if not more than the children! That s how cup noodles were invented. Momofuku Ando (1910 – 2007)
