Chapter One - Healthy eating for the family

Introduction to healthy foodWe all know that we need to eat healthily. And although our modern society has put a great emphasis on convenience and junk foods, there has never been so much pressure on all of us to look good, and to appear fit and healthy.

The importance of healthy eating for young people Pick up any magazine, or watch any TV show, and you will be faced with a slew of identical "beautiful people" who have more than a little in common when it comes to appearance. So much so that they can only be likened to modern day Stepford Wives! All perfect hair, teeth, and tans with their tiny little size zero figures. It is no wonder that so many young people are becoming insecure about themselves. These physical ideals are completely unattainable, and as responsible and loving parents, each and every one of us needs to consistently instill the importance of positive self image and healthy eating within our children. What kids learn when they are young, they will take on throughout the rest of their lives.

Chapter Three - Saving money shopping

Healthy food Shopping ListWhen you go out to do your food shopping, take any coupons you may have with you and take into account any special offers on healthy foods which you enjoy or have yet to taste. Keeping your weekly or monthly meal plan in mind, or better still, bringing it with you, is the way to avoid overbuying. So what are the steps to ensuring that your shopping list is healthy?

• Step one - That weekly or monthly meal plan we mentioned, bring it with you. Ensure that each and every ingredient you will need is written down on it. Follow standard US dietary guidelines or the ones which are supplied later in the book.

• Purchase a full variety of fresh vegetables and fruit for your family. Bear in mind that it is necessary to eat at least five portions per day. Green leafy vegetables are an excellent source of nutrients and do remember to eat plenty of orange colored vegetables too. Food prices often fluctuate depending on what is in season. Plan your meals accordingly.
