SENSORIMOTOR PERIOD

• This stage of intelligence is generally from birth to around age 2 however an infant’s knowledge grows significantly each month. Infant’s intelligence is based on sensations and actions and thinking is limited to what is stimulating the infant at that time. One major feat the infant must master over the months is object permanence- the notion that things continue to exist when they are out of sight.

Little Tikes 5-in-1 Adjustable GymThis toy helps the infant to realize that they can perform actions through pushing a button and it lighting up or spinning the wheel and it making a sound. This toy also has removable pieces so the parent can eventually help the child to discover object permanence.

PREOPERATIONAL PERIOD

• “The Preschool Years”• The pre-operational child

makes progress in memory, language development and the ability to think symbolically but still lacks certain mental operations that form the basis of adult logic. These children which are generally ages 2-6 have thought processes flawed by egocentrism- the inability to take another person’s point of view.

• Just Like Home Betty Crocker Pots, Pans & Play Food Set can help place the child in someone else’s viewpoint and have the child start to compare themselves to other who cook. Parent can also have the child separate and categorize pieces of play set by various classifications such as function, size and shape.

CONCRETE OPERATIONS PERIOD

• “The School Years”• Child has lost some

egocentrism and begins to be able to use the mental operations of adult logic. The child can now begin to understand conservation- the realization that objects stay the same even when they are changed about or made to look different.

• Ages 7-11

• Easy-bake Oven and Easy-bake Brownie Mix with instruction the child can begin to understand that the amount of brownie mix stays the same before and after it has been “baked” in the oven through conservation of numbers.

FORMAL OPERATIONS PERIOD

• “The Teen Years”• This is the final stage of

cognitive development in which adolescents become able to apply mental operations to abstract or hypothetical operations. Formal thought allows adolescents to think logically about the future. Ages 12 & above

• Lenovo Ideapad S10-3 Netbook is not exactly a toy but is now fundamental in understanding future opportunities available for developing teens today.
