This article provides you with three very different website search engine optimisation tips for your self-hosted WordPress website.

Two are directly related to WordPress, the third is applicable to any website.

How to create ‘Search Engine Friendly’ urls in WordPress.

On WordPress this is called Permalinks, which is easy to enable.

However permalinks can slow your website down if you have a large website, but in the latter part of 2011 an updated version of WordPress is scheduled to address this issue.

In the meantime you should also consider disabling revisions in your WordPress database.

How to turn on permalinks:

1. If you don’t already have a .htaccess file in the root of your WordPress installation you will need to create one. For Microsoft Windows users you can create a blank text file, call it htaccess.txt, upload the file to your server via FTP and then rename it to .htaccess. For linux users you can create the file called .htaccess without any issues on your desktop, then upload to the root of your installation.

2. Now you need to make the .htaccess file writable via ftp. You can do this with most ftp clients by right clicking on the file and changing the access settings to 777 from 644.

3. From the WordPress Dashboard select ‘Permalinks’ from the ‘Settings’ section.

4. Select custom and enter: /%postname%/

5. Now save the changes.

6. Now via FTP make your .htaccess read-only access again. i.e. chmod 644

How to notify different online services of your new posts.

When a new post is published a self-hosted WordPress will automatically ‘ping’ services, such as Google search.

The amount of online services that are pinged depends on the list you’ve provided in your WordPress dashboard.

How to modify your ping list:

1. Log into WordPress’s Dashboard as an administrator.

2. Select ‘Writing’ from the ‘Settings’ section.

3. Scroll down to the bottom and amend your list.

If you try to include too many services it can actually work against you and have devastating results, but if you achieve the right balance, it will help spread the word about your blog posts faster.

Learn from your Google AdWords campaigns

Many WordPress website owners run Google AdWords campaigns.

Now for those new to Google AdWords campaigns the chosen keywords might have been chosen via Google’s Keyword Tool, perhaps your own website statistics, else a bit of help from SEOQuake?

Regardless of how you choose your initial keywords, when you run a Google AdWords campaign it shows you detailed data about your campaign results.

Which is easy to analyse to find details such as performing keywords and their price per click.

If your campaign showed that you got a reasonable amount of click-throughs for a low ad price, it is probably worth you incorporating these keywords into your daily blogging routine, and seeing if you can stimulate some of that visitor traffic naturally not via Google AdWords.
