WHO INVENTED ?

Alexander Stepanovich Popov

Russian physicist and electrician, a professor, an

inventor.

He invented radio in 1895.

FAMILY

His family consisted of his father, the local priest

Stepan Petrovich Popov, his wife and 6 more

children, among them was his sister Augustus, the

future well-known artist. Their life was very humble.

EDUCATION

After graduating from general education classes in

Perm seminary. Alexander successfully passed the

entrance exams for the Physics and Mathematics

Faculty of St. Petersburg State University. He

successfully graduated from the University in 1882

with a Master’s degree. Popov was invited to stay

there to prepare for a professorship in the

Department of Physics. Since 1901 Popov was

professor of Physics in Electrotechnical Institute of

Emperor Alexander III.

ACHIEVEMENTS

He invented a radio receiver. Radio Day is

considered to be May 7, 1895. That day he made a

report about a signal transmission over a distance

without wires at the meeting of the Russian Physico

Chemical Society. Popov initiated the development

of world science and technology - the era of

development radio electronics.

DEATH

Alexander Stepanovich Popov died in December

31, 1905 from a stroke. He was Buried at Volkov

cemetery in St. Petersburg.
