TOWARDS A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON MIGRATION AND DISPLACEMENTS: A LATIN AMERICAN
ETHNOGRAPHIC OVERVIEW
A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON MIGRATION AND DISPLACEMENTS
PROPOSAL
Global migration should be examined as an integral part of a variety of
types and scales of displacements as a way of bringing to light the
interstices of domination and power and, thus, the logics of partial
access, exclusion and dispossession produced by contemporary
capitalism.
A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON MIGRATION AND DISPLACEMENTS
This means that, if we take into account a variety of types and scales of
displacements (such as transnational migrations, refuge, deportations,
human trafficking, internal migrations and displacements forced by wars,
large developments projects or real state interests, assassinations,
imprisonments, militarization of urban peripheries, among others) as part of
a global perspective on migrations and displacements, we can
understand better the relations between these different
mobilities/immobilities and the production of social inequalities in this
conjuncture of capitalism
TOWARDS A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON MIGRATION AND DISPLACEMENTS
• The starting assumption is that an examination of the current social
processes demands new theoretical paradigms capable of dissolving
the ingrained positivist fragmentation that divides knowledge in
different fields of study and reifies the nation-state.
• The formulation of this broader perspective on migration and
displacements is an attempt to place migrations, migration policies
and the social agency of migrants, refugees and other (internal)
displaced people against a global scenery marked by flexible capital
and labor, outsourcing, privatization, financialization, technocratic
governance, state redistribution and state violence
MOBILITIES AND IMMOBILITESGLOBAL GOVERNANCE AND THE NEW LOGIC OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION
IN THIS FORMULATION, I TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT:
• The control of the mobility/immobility of migrants, refuge seekers and
refugees has turned into a priority of the multilateral agencies and
national governments 'public agendas
• Also the internal displacements related to the removal of territories
and people at the margins have became de focus of local public
policies that reflect global multilateral agendas
USEFUL CONCEPTUAL TOOLS TO DISCERN THE CURRENT PROCESSES THROUGH THE PERSPECTIVE OF CAPITAL
I ALSO RELY ON:
• Harvey´s accumulation by dispossession idea & the emergence of a “new imperialism (2004)
• Sassen´s notion of expulsions & the emergence of a new logic of exclusion, in the last decades. ( 2014)
• Quijano’s coloniality of power notion & racialization and gendered
classification of the world
NEW LOGICS OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION:MOBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS TO MOBILITY
•My interest is to understand the relations between the increasing social
unequalities and dispossession & the social action and agency of
migrants, refugees and other displaced people in the present
conjuncture of capitalism.
•“WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO RIGHTS”? & “ WHO HAS RIGHT TO BE HUMAN?
•Are there global patterns?
GLOBAL MIGRATIONS AND DISPLACEMENTS: A LATIN-AMERICAN ETHNOGRAPHIC OVERVIEW
• In this presentation, I focus on the impacts of Latin-American dialogues
and ethnographies in the formulation of a global perspective on
migration and displacements.
• This set of ethnographies comprises historical or comparative case-
studies directed at deciphering the apparent contradictions between
humanitarianism and securitization, whether from the viewpoint of
migration and refugees governance policies, border control and
trafficking of human being or illicit goods, forced political and
ecological (internal) displacements, policing of/ or the management
of disputes, conflicts, assassinations in urban squatters and peripheries.
