Skeletal and Muscular Systems

What is the function of the muscular system?Muscles contract (get shorter) and extend (get longer) to help you move

Processing Piece:Look at the picture below. Label one part muscle contracts and the other part muscle extends.

What are 3 types of muscle tissue?Skeletal muscleVoluntary (you choose to move it)Striated (has stripes when you look at it under the microscope)Attached to bonesExample: arm muscles (biceps and triceps), leg muscles (quadriceps and hamstrings), ab muscles, etc.

What are 3 types of muscle tissue?2) Smooth muscleInvoluntary (you cant control its movement)Not striated (doesnt have stripes when you look at it under the microscope)Found in internal organsNot attached to bonesExample: muscles in the esophagus, stomach, intestines, and other parts of the digestive tract

What are 3 types of muscle tissue?3) Cardiac muscleInvoluntary (you cant control its movement)Striated (has stripes when you look at it under the microscope)Found only in the heart

Processing PieceDraw a picture to illustrate each type of muscle tissue.List the characteristics of each below your drawing.

Why are some muscles striated?Inside the cells of striated muscles, there are overlapping filaments (strings) of thick and thin fibers called actin and myosin.

How do muscles contract and extend?Myosin proteins (which look like hands) pull on the actin fibersThis makes the muscle cells contract (get shorter)

Processing PieceDraw a picture to illustrate how actin and myosin fibers work

How Actin and Myosin Make Muscles Contract

What is the function of the skeletal system?Provide structure for the bodyGive muscles something to attach to and pull onProtect other organs (ribs protect chest organs, and skull protects brain)Produce new blood cells from bone marrow

What are 2 types of bone tissue?Compact bone: hard, dense, heavy bone found on the outside of bonesSpongy bone: softer bone, full of blood vessels, found of the inside of bones

What is bone marrow?Soft tissue found of the inside of most bonesFull of blood vesselsProduces new blood cellsPart of spongy bone tissue

What connects muscles and bones?Ligaments connect bones to bones.Tendons connect bones to muscles.

Processing PieceWrite tendon and ligament and draw a picture to illustrate each.
