Kinds of Investigations

Scientists are like detectives. They investigate, or look for answers, using organized steps.

*Some investigations involve 1- observing 2- describing things or events.

*Other investigations may involve1- collecting samples 2- building models

Experiment : is an investigation carried out under carefully controlled conditions.

Scientist might do an experiment to find out if a new medicine works better than an old medicine.

Scientific Methods

Suppose you want to classify animals by how they keep warm.

You might do an experiment to test fur ’s ability to keep heat in water.

When scientists do an experiment, they use scientific methods.

Scientific methods include the steps shown below

Models

Scientists use models to investigate.Model : is a copy of something.

Models help scientists understand how things work.

Models help scientists study things that are very small,large,

or difficult to understand.

Some models are built out of materials such as paper and plastic.

Other models are made using a program on a computer.

This computer model shows how the skeleton moves as the human body walks.

Scientists have used computers to build models of the human

body.

These computer models help scientists better understand how difficult parts of the body, such as the heart and skeletal system, work.

The models can be used to train doctors.

This model is a copy of the solar system, a large group of objects in space

Models are useful, but they are not the same as the real thing.

For example, a computer model might show how a person’s body fits together.

But it might not show how well the body will function.

Surveys

Scientists use surveys to investigate.

Survey : is a list of questions or choices.

Scientists can give the list to many people and learn from their answers.

Scientists give surveys to patients to learn about their symptoms.

Then scientists can interpret the data and draw inferences.

The surveys and data can help scientists make new medicines.
