INTRODUCTIONIndia is the seventh largest country in the world, with a total

area of approximately 3.288 million square km.

India has a coastline of about 7,500 km with major cities including Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, and Kochi (Cochin).

There are 11 major, 16 intermediate, and 78 minor ports in India.

Indian landmass is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, the Bay of Bengal to the east, and the main Indian Ocean to the south.

Exclusive Economic Zone

Is an area beyond to the territorial sea.Extending seaward to 200 nmi (370 km) out from its

coastline.Territorial water ends at 12 nmi (22km) from the coastline. The EEZ include the contiguous zone. The contiguous zone is a band of water that goes from the

outer edge of the territorial sea to up to 24 nautical miles.India is currently seeking to extent its EEZ to 350.

EEZ of India

By the early eighties India obtained a wide EEZ of about 2.0134 million square km in the sea all along 7500 km long coastline.

The living and nonliving resources in this zone measured about two- third of country.

Trading and transport facilities navigated through area.

Millions of people living along the coastline are directly influenced by oceanography of the EEZ.

Mineral Potential of the EEZ Placer Deposits: Ilmenite placer-Ratangiri Maharashtra state south of the Bombay

west coast.

Placer deposits of the Narayanpur- Chatrapur- Goplapul coast and Malud-Puri coast as well as Chilka lake ,Orissa state –Magnetite, Ilmenite,Garnet, Sillimanite , Rutile, Zircon & Monazite.

In the coastal area from Kalingapatnam to Baruva, association of Ilmenite-Sillimanite-garnet.

Phosphate:Malabar coast in phosphatic mudbank (1-5% P2O5).At Bombay –Saurashtra coast.Phosphatic nodules are found north of the Andaman Island with 10% P2O5.

Cobalt:Mangnese and Cobalt crust of Tillanchand in Andaman sea (very low 0.08-0.25%)Co –rich crust may occur in thr IEEZ around Lakshadweep island, on both sides of the ninety degree East Ridge, N- Andaman sea.

Hydrothermal Mineralization:

Only in Andaman seaCu (up to 500 ppm)Zn (up to 500 ppmPb( up to 900 ppm)

Calcareous:Particularly from Lakshadweep Island
