We are pleased to announce that a 2nd Call for Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives (ERIs) and for Early Bird Projects is expected to open in mid-October and mid-November, respectively, and will remain open until mid-December, 2014. • Six proposals were approved for funding, among 21 submitted for evaluation, with a total budget of approximately € 6 million, half in Portugal and half at CMU, for approximately 48 months.

• Industry participation:

• > 50 companies participated in the consortia with > 60 participations

• Level of commitment > 3 million Euros in the 21 proposals

• > 1 million Euros in the six proposals recommended for funding

The Hyrax project proposes a novel vision of a hyperlocal edge-cloud, i.e., a computational/storage cloud comprised solely of a collection of nearby wireless edge devices, with the purpose of pooling these devices’ data and processing power to support a new class of proximity-aware applications that benefit the owners of these devices.

The Technology, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as The Lab) is a new multidisciplinary organization that brings together leading academic and corporate partners. The Vital Responder (VR) system has been developed under the CMU Portugal Program between 2009 and 2012. Being designed for fire-fighters (FF) – the most demanding professional scenarios among first responders – the VR project has generated a large number of devices, methodologies and know-how that are fostering other newly funded projects for some other hazardous professionals, such as Policemen or Paramedics.

+2nd Call for ERIs

International innovation engine that integrates research, education, innovation and industry collaboration, fulfilling the mission of the Program - establishing Portugal at the forefront of Science and Innovation in Information and Communication Technologies

Link scientific discovery to technological innovation, to advance technology and to produce graduates who will be creative innovators in a global economy.

Up to € 5.200.000, half to support Portuguese research institutions and half to support complementary activities at CMU.

The maximum budget for Portuguese research institutions in each ERI will be of € 650.000,00.

Depending upon the quality of the proposals, four to seven new ERI awards are expected to be financed.

A vision for bridging research to innovation and developing innovative and competitive talent;

A strategic plan for research, education and innovation, with a path to sustainability;

A cross-disciplinary research program enabler of innovation;

Cross-cultural global research, education and innovation experiences;

An education program that uses CMU Portugal’s dual degree programs;

An innovation program that includes partnerships with startups and/or established companies.

+Academia Participation in ERIs

The proposals must have at least two Portuguese research centers, belonging to distinct higher education institutions, one company, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Principal Investigator: The lead Portugal PI should be a faculty member, with a doctoral

degree relevant to ICT, or with substantial career experience in ICT. The lead Portugal PI shall be dedicated to the project, according to

the duration of the proposed activities, at no less than 35%. The lead PI at CMU must hold a faculty appointment at CMU.

+Early Bird Projects (EBPs)

Assist small teams of researchers from Portuguese institutions, Carnegie Mellon University and industry partners, to jumpstart high-impact potential activities of strategic relevance for the Program.

The proposals should be high-risk/high-reward and show promise and a strategy for significant future expansion of project goals and support from government agencies, companies, industry consortia, foundations or financial investors.

May be focused on setting off new advanced education activities, new research collaborations and areas, or new technology commercialization initiatives, among others.

About one hundred highly qualified jobs have already been created by the ten startups born within the Program.

In 2013, a tenth startup emerged from the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program – Sentilant, a spinoff from the Universidade de Coimbra.

Mambu received in early 2013, 2 million dollars (around 1.5 million euros) from Runa Capital, Point Nine (PNC) and Kizoo (three technology - focused venture capital companies).

In early 2013, FeedZai achieved profitability, and added two new U.S. investors, SAP Ventures and Data Collective, as part of a $2.4M investment.

Veniam’Works won the first place at the 3rd Edition of Building Global Innovators.

+2014 InRes Edition at a Glance

inRes, short for “in Residence,” is a very early stage acceleration program for entrepreneurial teams working in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), in Portugal, offered by the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program.

inRes provides entrepreneurial teams a training period in Portugal, followed by an eight-week structured immersion period in Pittsburgh, in the U.S., anchored at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

The participating teams are benefiting from the exposure to a highly dense environment of world-leading research groups, and market and industry specialists, in a variety of high-tech areas.

A new edition is expected to be launched in 2015!
