Unit 15B: Digestion: An Absorbing Tale
October 3, 2014
Activity 15B: Digestion: An Absorbing TaleOctober 4, 2014
Getting Started: Compare and Contrast mechanical and chemical digestion.
Introduction: Read and summarize pg.B-22 in one sentence.
Digestion: An Absorbing TaleYour digestive system is responsible for both mechanical and chemical breakdown. Everything you eat and drink, including medicine enters your body through this system. You can probably name a lot of the organs that food passes through, such as the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine. There are other organs, however, like the liver and pancreas, which help your digestive system work even though food does not pass through them. What happens as food and other substances travel through your body?
How does your digestive system work?
15B
Challenge: Rewrite the challenge question in your own words.
Key Words: absorb/absorption, chemical breakdown, cross-section, digestive system, function, mechanical breakdown, organ, nutrients, tissue, toxins
Procedure: This is a stopping to think activity. You will read a section then answer questions about the passages main idea.
Results: Student Sheet 14.1 “Your Digestive System”
Cross-Section Color Time and Function
Analysis: Answer Analysis Questions 1-4.
Reflection: Take a closer look at the villi of the small intestine. How do the villi help nutrients move into the blood quickly?
14.1 “Your Digestive System”
Complete this sheet as you read by recording the name and function of each organ in the digestive system as you read.
1. The core is the inside of the tube is where food is held.
2. This separates food carried in the S.I. from the rest of the body. Nutrients cross this layer when they are absorbed.
3. Nutrients enter the tiny blood vessels found in this layer.
4. Layer of muscle which contracts to move digestive products along the intestine.
Color Time
• Use one color and color all the parts of the digestive system the same color.
• Write the major function of each organ• Answer the following questions– How does each organ help me digest food (make a
list)?– How do nutrients get from the digestive system to
the rest of the organs in my body?
• The digestive system breaks down food and absorbs nutrients. This occurs from the mouth to the anus. All along the way, food is broken down through both chemical and mechanical digestion.
Produce SalivaMove food to the stomach
Remove toxins Breaks down and absorbs food
Absorbs nutrientsAbsorbs water
Holds solid wasteWhere solid waste exits thebody.
Aids chemical breakdown
Question 1
• What are some functions of the digestive system?
Question 2Functions of Digestive System
Question 3
• Imagine taking a bite of a burrito. Follow the beans in the burrito through the process of digestion. Explain what types of changes take place and where each change happens.
Question 4
• Most substances are absorbed in the small intestine and not in the stomach. Aspirin is a common exception; it is absorbed in the stomach. Some alcohol is absorbed in the stomach, but most is absorbed in the intestine.– Why would you want medicines, like aspirin, to be
absorbed in the stomach instead of the small intestine?– What is the effect of some alcohol being absorbed in the
stomach?
