What is Video Interviewing?

I’m starting with the basics and not assuming anyone knows what video interviewing is, though I will at least assume that everyone knows what a computer and webcam are.

Common Terminology:

Before we discuss how video interviewing works it is important to discuss the various terminology used to describe this solution so that you won’t be confused when you search for a provider.

• Live Interview – This solution allows two or more people in different locations to interact with one another in real time over the web similar to a Skype interview.

• Two-Way Interview – Another term used to describe a live interview

• Automated Interview – This autonomous solution allows one individual, usually the job candidate, to screen themselves. Essentially questions appear one at a time on screen and the individual’s webcam and microphone records the candidate’s responses.

• One-Way Interview – Another term used to describe an automated interview

How does Video Interviewing work?

Online services allow job candidates to take an interview (either Live or Autonomous) online using their computer’s internal webcam or external webcam, microphone, and speakers.

Page 9: Video interviewing 101 - Everything You Need To Know

For business purposes a user within a hiring company invites a job candidate to participate in either a live or automated interview.

Live interviews occur at a scheduled time while Automated Interviews can occur at the candidate’s convenience.

Live Interviews occur at the previously scheduled time and the two parties, generally the interviewer and interviewee, are free to engage in conversation until such time as they wish to terminate the interview.

Live interviews, depending on the vendor facilitating them, may or may not be recorded. Not all providers allow for this feature.

Upon completion, if the interview is recorded, the interviewer may send the interview to colleagues for review and collaboration.

Automated interviews, which allow the candidate to screen themselves at their convenience, are recorded so the hiring manager may review later at their convenience.

The candidate logs in to a video interviewing portal provided to them in an email invitation or via an online form. Previously uploaded questions appear on the screen one at a time and the candidate answers the questions presented.

The questions uploaded by the user can be customized to be relevant to the job being filled.

The video interview is normally indexed by question so that the hiring manager, HR professional, etc. can quickly screen through the interview by jumping from question to question.

How does video interviewing fit into your hiring process?

We do not recommend that video interviewing take the place of the face-to-face interview. We see it rather as a more revealing replacement for the phone screen and a means to screen out unworthy candidates prior to them walking through your door.

Video interviewing fits easily into your hiring process as follows with little process change.

Legality:

Video Interviewing is simply a tool designed to screen candidates for potential skills, energy and enthusiasm prior to the interviewing process.

If your staff discriminates against candidates during the video interviewing process, than they will do so for the same reasons during the face to face interview. Proper diversity training is always necessary.

Page 26: Video interviewing 101 - Everything You Need To Know

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has ruled that learning the race, gender, or ethnicity of a candidate prior to the face-to-face interview is not illegal.

Race, gender and ethnicity information about a candidate can be gleaned from social networking sites and resumes.

Tips for Conducting Successful Interviews:

• Dress Appropriately: Whether you are the interviewer or interviewee, dress with success in mind. • Ensure you have proper lighting – Obviously you don’t want to sit in a darkened room with only the light from your monitor illuminating your face. Avoid too many lights in the background which may cast a shadow from behind.• Turn off your cell phone

Page 28: Video interviewing 101 - Everything You Need To Know

• Remove background clutter – That’s right, take down your Taylor Swift posters.• Relax• Smile – If you are doing a live interview then put your candidate at ease by smiling. If you are a candidate then your interviewer has already agreed you have some skills to do the job. Smile and show your energy.• Don’t sit too close or too far away – We don’t want to see your pores but we also want to hear you. Position yourself so that you see you from your shoulders up.
