How towns are plannedOur towns are planned with a comprehensive range of facilities to meet the needs of current and future residents. These include housing, shops, schools, libraries, sports facilities, community clubs and parks – all important in ensuring a liveable, self-sufficient town. The facilities are carefully distributed across each town to ensure good accessibility, supported by an efficient transport network. Most towns also have commercial nodes and other employment centres such as industrial estates and business parks within the town or nearby, to provide job opportunities close to homes. These facilities and employment centres will be developed according to demand.

The detailed planning and implementation of plans for each town is a joint effort of many government agencies.

The development of one-north is progressing steadily and will continue to create exciting job opportunities in this cutting-edge live-work-play-learn environment. Upcoming developments include:

• Lucasfilm’s Sandcrawler, at Fusionopolis• The Metropolis, a new office building next to Buona Vista MRT Station• Mediacorp’s new headquarters at Mediapolis• CampusesofESSEC and Unilever’s Four Acres Corporate University at Nepal Hill

As the first satellite town, Queenstown has a rich history that is closely linked to Singapore’s nation building. Today, several buildings, including Princess House, the former Anchor Brewery Brewmaster’s House and the Church of

the Blessed Sacrament, have been conserved. To further preserve memories of a shared past and to enrich

residents’ sense of belonging, more heritage buildings will be conserved:

•Former Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market at Block 38 Commonwealth

Avenue, which will be incorporated into a new HDB development

•Queenstown Library, the first community library in Singapore•Blocks 1, 2 and 6 of the historic Alexandra Hospital•394 Alexandra Road

Besides these treasured landmarks, Queenstown is home to Holland Village, one of the more popular lifestyle destinations in Singapore. While there are plans to rejuvenate an old housing precinct, care will be taken to safeguard its distinctive character as an urban village with intimate streetscapes. Besides new housing, there will be a new community park planned for this area and a new mixed-use development that will provide sufficient car parking for visitors. The extended Holland Village will have a human-scale, pedestrian-oriented environment and public spaces.

Queenstown offers a wide range of recreational facilities and landscapes for residents of all ages to delight in their favourite outdoor activities. In addition to major parks such as West Coast Park, Kent Ridge Park and HortPark, residents have easy access to green spaces within the housing estates. Green spaces are being planned for most households to be no more than a 10-minute walk away from a park:

• Anexpandedpark connector network, including links to the future Round Island Route, will make it easier for residents to walk or cycle to other parks and attractions• Anew community park at Holland Village• TheRail Corridor as a green route for walking and cycling• Aninnovativepark at one-north that will have a car park tucked underneath it and that will double up as an outdoor event space next to MediaCorp’s new campus
