Homeowners want nothing more than to feel safe andsecure within their own homes, and a crucial part of that ispreventing break-ins. A burglary does not just cost themtheir possessions, it also puts them at risk of injury anddestroys the sense of safety they have.
Many Australians now invest in keeping their propertiessecure from forced entry. What do people usually do tomake their homes safer, though?
A fence is an excellent physical barrier, and combined with a locked gate, helpskeep strangers out of the grounds. They are built to last for many years, sothey are made from highly durablematerials that can stand up to abuse.Slat fencing designs also keep theinterior somewhat visible, preventingburglars from counting on the fence tohide them once they are inside.
Visibility is a major deterrent for most criminals, as burglars use the darknessto mask their approach. Excellent lighting outside the home, especially aroundthe possible entrances, will make it much harder for anyone to break inundetected.
Thieves also look for good hiding places that they can use while approaching theproperty, such as thick bushes. Many will also climb trees to get to second storeywindows or balconies, as these are usually less secure than the ground floor.
Homeowners need to pay muchattention to the windows and doorsof their property, as these are thetwo most common entrances thatthieves use to get into the property.Installing deadbolts on the front andback door are crucial, and usingshatter resistant film on windows cangreatly enhance their durability.
Special mention must be made forglass sliding doors, as many of thesehave highly vulnerable frames. It isnot difficult to force them open, oreven pop them right out of theframe, giving the burglar free accessto the home.
Surveillance cameras and burglar alarms are affordable, and make for excellent deterrents. Thieves will almostnever set foot inside a home with a good security system,as the chances of them being caught are high, even if theymanage to escape at first.
Burglars are opportunists, and even a few minor securitymeasures can be enough to discourage them fromtargeting a home. It is not crucial for a home to beimpenetrable; when criminals feel that the risk faroutweighs the reward, they will steer clear and go after adifferent property.
