• The city of Highland Park incorporated with about 600 residents, a school, a hotel, and a religious association in March 1869.

• Residents supported investment in a public library (1887) and annexed the village of Ravinia, south of Highland Park, in 1899.

• By the turn of the century, Highland Park's population was 2,806, and socially, if not economically diverse. Institutions such as the Gads Hill Summer Settlement House encampment, the Railroad Men's Home, and Wildwood, a resort for German-Jewish families excluded from suburban country clubs, attest to this diversity.

• The city experienced two growth spurts—in the 1920s, when the population grew by 98% to 12,203—and in the 1950s, when it leapt 52% to 25,532.

“Just outside of Chicago, Highland Park has all of the benefits of the big city, but none of the hassles. And if you don’t want to venture into Chicago to get your kicks, Highland Park has more than enough to offer. The downtown district is abuzz with restaurant goers and shoppers, and once a year the Ravinia Festival takes over, turning the city into a mecca for music lovers, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra who have been playing in Highland Park since the 1930s. And while you’re downtown, you won’t need to worry about watching your back—Highland Park came in first in safety, with a crime rate 56 percent below the Illinois average. And perhaps not surprisingly, with famous houses like the Willits House by Frank Lloyd Wright dotting the streets, Highland Park came in first when it comes to home values in Chicago—their home values are 221 percent higher than the Illinois average. Way to go, Highland Park.”

946 Lilac Lane | Craftsman Bungalow

The house was built in 1925 in the craftsman bungalow style. Homes built in this architectural tradition are renowned for their sturdy and comfortable design.

The craftsman bungalow style has its roots in the Arts and Crafts Movement which began in the 1880’s when furniture designer Gustav Stickley published house plans in his magazine called Craftsman. Soon the word "Craftsman" became synonymous with Arts & Crafts, and the Craftsman Bungalow became one of the most popular housing types in the USA.

946 Lilac Lane is an exceptional example of the movement’s celebration of simple forms and use of natural materials.

If having a bathroom on the main floor is a “must have”, there is plenty of room for an addition. A powder room could easily be built by closing off a portion of the huge dining room.
