Timeline:• Contests and Promotions are placed directly on

your Facebook Timeline

• Will be seen by your fan base in their News Feed

• Contests and Promotions may require the entrant to:

• Like the post

• Post a reply comment

Apps:• Contests and Promotions are only seen by a Fan

visiting your page unless it is publicized

• Publicizing Contests and Promotions are done by posting to the Timeline, so that it can be seen in your Fans’ News Feed

• Entrants click the image/link, and complete the entry requirements on the specific app page displaying the promotion

• Entry requirements usually include Liking the casino’s page, which then gives the user access to fill out the entry form

Disadvantages of Timeline Contests• Need to post the rules of the contest and the required release of Facebook’s responsibility within the post, or link to the terms and conditions

• Email addresses with entries are not collected• May not increase fans as much as a LIKE-gated app would• Notifying the winner can be a challenge• If you require a Like and a Comment, could take a considerable

amount of time to manage the Contest, and to validate the entrants, especially if you have an overwhelming amount of entries

Timeline Best Practices• Have a good picture to describe the Contest basics• Clearly describe the rules• Require a Like and a comment to enter• Pin and Highlight your post for more visibility• Keep the length of a timeline contest to approx. one (1) week• Use an App if you have a larger following, are giving away bigger prizes,

or want to collect potential customer email addresses

Do:• Acknowledge that the contest is in no way sponsored, endorsed or

administered by, or associated with, Facebook • Require people to both Like and comment on a post • Use Likes as a voting method • Use random winner generators like random.org to choose winners.• Announce the winner of the contest on your page• After the winner is announced, have the winner message you.

This ensures that people will have to come back to your page to see if they have won

Don’t:• Require an entry method that people SHARE a post or photo • Require someone to post something on their own or a friends’

timeline • Require people to tag themselves in a photo to either vote or

enter a contest
