4 Common Styles of Row Houses

1. Federal Style

Adapted from Georgian style which highlights symmetry

It has flat and smooth façade

All elements could apply to row houses except side-gabled roofing

2. Colonial Style

It refers to home styles during the colonial period in the U.S.

The design is often symmetrical and the entry door is in the middle of the house.

Colonial homes were made of brick in some regions. However, there are colonial style houses with wood cladding.

3. Victorian Style

This architectural style was popular during the late 19th century. (Victorian Era)

The basic characteristic of this style is the pointed roofing that makes it look like a classic castle.

4. Italianate

This style has flat roofing. It usually has corbels. A corbel

is a decorative element but it is also projected as support for roof eaves.

It usually has tall and angled bay windows, especially in the first floor.

This style is less common in the D.C. area.

Row houses can be as versatile as single-family homes when it comes to architectural design, except that they often do not have much outdoor space. Almost any type of architectural design can also be applied to row houses.
