SIPs and Natural Disasters

Structural Insulated Panels have exceptional strength to resist typical loads caused by seismic activity and high winds. Additionally, they have proven to be extremely fire resistant.

In January, 1993 a magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked the city of Kobe, Japan, killing more than 5,000 and dislocating several hundred thousand. Six SIPs homes were located within a 2-mile radius of the epicenter and all six stood solidly as entire city blocks tumbled around them.

Hurricane Hugo struck Charleston, South Carolina with a vengeance in September of 1989, causing over one billion dollars in damage to buildings, roads, and other infrastructure. Three cottages, located within 1/2-mile of the shoreline, received no structural damage while neighboring homes were damaged beyond repair. This unfortunate event actually can be attributed to the tremendous growth of the SIPs product throughout the southeastern United States. Ultimately leading to the construction of the main factory located in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina.
